[NYR] Michael Del Zotto re-signed (2 years, $2.55M cap hit)
Actually, this is how second contracts are supposed to work.
It's funny that Slats is one of the only sane GMs when it comes to RFA contracts.

WOW. That is a really, really good deal for the Rangers.
Much cheaper than everyone thought, and he'll still be restricted at the end of this deal.
Anyone who finds something wrong with this deal is just jealous and probably bad at hiding it.
The downside to the deal is that it's up at the same time Callahan and Lundqvist's deals are up (and Gaborik's deal but they may be more willing to let him walk since he'll be approaching his mid 30's at that point). More guys to sign in one year puts a little more pressure on
What "crazy" signing has Slats made lately? Gaborik has been awesome and Richards was a no brainer for us as we didnt have a #1 center plus I heard he took less to play here. Slats is also amazing with his own players
The Gaborik deal, while high in cap hit, has turned out to be decent.
The Richards deal is still too early to tell, he signed a long term deal that could come back to bite the Rangers at some point.

Depends.
Richards deal goes down to $1m in actual pay the last 3years of the deal with a cap hit of $6.6m.
With the type of heady game he plays he could still hypotheticaly be a productive player in a 2nd/3rd line capacity to a small market team looking to fill cap space without having to pay the actual dollars. And if NYR wins a couple Cups in the mean time or ECF appearences that would make him atractive to small market teams looking for leadership as they tend to be perpetually rebuilding with youth constantly out of need.
Only time will tell what the legacy of teh Sather/Richards contract.
But based on the player Richards is, you can see the risk is not as high as some of the past head scratchers we've seen.

When Richards' salary becomes $1MM, he will be 37 years old and have already made about $104MM. If he retires in the off-season leading up to that year, which is very possible, his cap hit will be $5.67MM for 3 years. That doesn't sound good at all.
