This trade feels very meh to me. Like I said earlier with any hope it's a high 3rd rounder. Besides all that Fistric was always going to be temporary here and we haven't lost anything of great value. It does leave our D looking awfully thin but maybe there is another trade in the works that hasn't popped up yet, there's no way to know. Maybe he'll somehow trade Glennie away for a top-4 D. I can dream right?
I think you are really not taking into consideration what Dillion will brink to the table for the team.
Twitter quote "On a positive note, today at practice, @BDillon04 owned a roster spot with his play. He was fast, hitting anything that moved and hard."
We have Oleksiak and Nemeth ready for a call up only 3.5 hours away so I think we are a little thicker than cheesecloth
Not at all. I've been an advocate for Dillon playing in the top 4 all offseason.
You always err on the side of more depth on defense. Always. It's great to give Dillon the chance and it's exactly what I'd do. But you also have a backup plan in place in case he falters. Jordie Benn is not a backup plan. Aaron Rome playing in your top 4 is not a backup plan. Rushing your high-ceiling prospects is not a backup plan.
I guess Jordie Benn is making the team as the #7. I don't think he's ready for that. We'll have to see what Rome's got as well, not convinced he's a real #6 either. The D is thin as cheesecloth.
This is what surprises me the most. With a short, compressed schedule you would think that the Stars would want to have an extra bottom pairing defenseman on the roster. Especially since neither Benn or Rome have been a regular #6 in the NHL.
This can only mean one thing, Joe is making room because Benn is being traded for Subban!!!!!!!!!
Seriously though, I hope GMJN signs/trades for a veteran D-man for the #6/7 spot. Jordie should be getting quality minutes in Cedar Park, not sitting in the stands watching, and if he is a starter come opening day, then the D is weaker then I had anticipated.
He is 1 foot taller and only 5 pounds lighter than Fistric...
7'2'' is pretty damn tall.
I'm a fan of Fistric as I value and like physical defenceman but people are right, they had no faith in him. As a borderline NHLer, I'm OK with a 3rd. It's definitely not overwhelming but it seems fair.
That's the big question though. Is he ready? After the Niskanen ordeal, I'm sure they're not wanting to rush him.
I think he is ready in a way. He could join the NHL and it wouldnt be a huge problem for him at this point but I also think he could still benefit from the AHL level, particularly if given powerplay time.
That's not the problem. We've still lost a lot of physicality that needs to be replaced. We're very small on the backend now.
Dillon is absolutely a smasher, and can play big time hockey, but he can't be the only one that we have to do that.
No I totally agree with that, but all these casual fans are saying we got smaller with this trade and that's bull****. We basically replaced Fistric with a more skilled, taller version. It's undoubtedly still a small D core that is screaaaaaaaaming for THE MIGHTY OLEKSIAK
Defensive pairings is an issue now but it was an issue before as well. Theres really no good combination of these guys. I think Dillon-Daley is generally considered to be a potentially good pairing but that leaves everything else still messed up. Goligoski-Robidas? Ugh Goligoski-Larsen? Probably not much better. Rome with anyone isnt going to be great.
Well if your choices are trade Fistric for a 3rd or sit him in the press box because he's not your guy, for whatever reason, Dallas made the right deal. Depth is good but Fistric wasn't going to be given that opportunity so moving him makes the most sense.
Rome doesn't inspire me with confidence and watching Goligoski and Robidas is going to have me yelling but until Olesiak and Nemeth are both truly ready and Dallas finally cuts bait with Robidas mediocre to poor defense is what you're going to get. Dillion is a plus who's going to get better but despite all the work up front Dallas is still a team on the outside looking in who's best days are probably two seasons from now, which sucks but hey that's the way it appears the prospects are maturing.
