Not sold on Edler being better than Subban right now. But even if he was, it doesn't matter, the contract/rights status means I would never consider a swap from the Habs' POV.

Subban is better than Edler now and is a RFA, why does Montreal consider this?

I love me some PK but Edler is has to be the hill we die on. (oh yeah, I used that phrase). If he doesn't sign here then that really hurts us but I imagine we'll do everything we can to keep him.

PK apparently wants to sign long-term at big dollars and the team isn't sure since they know they're going to need to acquire high priced forwards but can probably develop high end D internally.

Probably because the general consensus is that Edler is better than Subban now. What makes you think PK is better? Offense, defense, physicality?

Very similar to the Edler situation.
But never just one lesser player. And certainly not with a 1st along with him.

No team, especially a contender, would add to a player just to downgrade at a position, irregardless of contract status or perceived upside.

I'm not saying Montreal should do it. I'm saying there is no way the Canucks would consider this.

I think that most posters would acknowledge that Edler is better right now. Subban needs to show that he can be a top guy consistently. He appears to have gotten over the issues that led to his benching but we've seen young players regress before.
I'd need to see him keep up his play for another year before I'd even put him in the conversation with Edler.

Overall in their careers I'd say Edler has been better but Subban was better in the 2nd half of last season.

It's pretty explainable given that Edler was nursing a back problem last year (which resulted in him getting paid through the lockout this year).

What about if Edler informed the Canucks he won't re-sign with them after his contract runs out and will test UFA. Would they consider it then? I doubt that would happen but just throwing it out there.

We'd still keep him for a cup run. I don't want to downgrade our roster before what will likely be our best shot at a cup for the forseeable future.

Maybe we could try flipping him for an equivalent calibre winger, but as that's unlikely we'd most likely keep him for a cup run, and if he still insisted on walking, we'd deal his rights for a 2nd at the draft.

That said, I see no reason why he wouldn't re-sign with us, and have not heard any speculation from any credible sources about that.

Yeah. That was the first thing that came to mind when the nucks lost to the kings. The Edler that shows up in the playoffs, didn't. He would have really helped the nucks out.

Guy is pretty beastly when he wants to be. Doesn't seem to have that seem seek and destroy mentality in the regular season.

No deal. Sign Edler to a 3-5 years affordable deal first and we can talk.

this is ridiculous Edler is UFA at the end of the season, subban have a ton more value than a rental guy that doesnt assure us to make the playoff ?

+ I'm not sure Edler's better than subban right now so imagine if subban continue to develop

So the team that picked in the top 5 at the draft is acquiring a playoff rental before they even play their first game of the season... and you're nitpicking about who is better?

I think we're discussing who is better which is reasonable on a hockey board.

I don't think it makes sense for the Habs to trade Subban for Edler in any way...I've tried to offer forward prospects + picks for him instead (which might make sense if the speculation from Hockey Tonight is true).

That's pretty much a bunch of crap maybe 12 dman are better than Subban right now and saying Weber is the best dman in the league is quite laughable Ryan Suter was better than him last year and is 5th.

Oliver ekman Larsson is nowhere better than Subban, the funny thing about Subban is people think that because he is a hab, habs fans tend to overrate him, the kid as been stellar last year keeping a plus minus even playing quality time on the top pk unit and contribuing on the pp. He is really an all around dman that can do it all not a lot of dman are as complete as Subban. He is not the best anywhere but is good everywhere.

Putting cambpell Timmonen, Enstrom and Johnson in front of him is nearly an insult.

What's up with this fad for putting Edler in trade proposals? Getting annoying. No interest in moving him whatsoever.
