Maybe he actually did lose weight this off-season?

You just described the role of a 4th liner except good 4th liners are also good penalty killers.

If he could be a good penalty killer I think he would provide a significant role for this team.

Exactly. There is a reason why their described as dime-a-dozen players.

It would be a tough line to play against, as long as the other line is trying to be as tough.

It would be a pretty easy line to play against as long as the other team is actually trying to control play and attempt to score.

By the way, no Rinaldo can't fight. As long as he's fighting another team's fighter. If he's fighting a guy who doesn't fight that often, he'll do ok. Guess which one happens more.

Also, looks like the Flyers did just fine with Rinaldo in the press box when the Penguins gooned it up. They know he's worthless just doing those things -- that's why they're trying to make him a penalty killer.

Thanks guys. Picked up Jake on waivers two nights ago. I'm having fits on which to keep between Simmonds and Schenn...don't want to have three Flyers on my team (pool)....seems a bit risky if we have a bad game as much as I have adopted the Flyers as my team in the East since last year.

My other buddy has Hartnell and G. Hence why if I take Schenn as well I would 3 out of the top 6 for us...still debating right now...ahhhh!

Which is why he will have a short NHL career if he doesn't improve that aspect of his game. I love the style of play Rinaldo brings but lets be realistic here Reno fans. This isn't the same hockey i grew up watching in the early 90s. There is no room for one dimensional role players anymore.

Am I the only one alittle skeptical of having both Feds and Talbot in the top 9?

Not sure if it will end that way.

Keep in mind, the Flyers were looking for a goal scorer to put with Giroux, another thing that was never addressed considering JVR was traded away. Have to see what's out there still.

Make dew until you can make a run at Corey Perry in the summer!

I'm sure it changes during the season because i don't think there is a way Coots doesn't kill penalties.
Couturier was playing on the power play side of the special teams drills today. He'll absolutely kill penalties once year starts. Ditto guys like Timonen.

After practice, Laviolette pretty much said that Rinaldo won't kill penalties this year except in an emergency. Really, what happened today is they were doing special teams work and a lot of the guys who normally play both ends of special teams were on the power play side. With no Briere, Couturier was on the 2nd PP unit.

So they needed some bodies to fill out PKer roles among the forwards. Really not much more to it than that.

Me too. Would be nice to get someone for that 3rd line LW spot. Best option would probably be someone on an expiring contract because of the cap reduction. What's Clarke MacArthur's contract situation?

I've never said something to that extent, but a lot of teams count on their 4th line to create energy. It's not a coincidence that most Stanley Cup winning teams always seem to have the best fourth and third line in the league.

Casually work into the conversation how good Corey perry would look off the opposite wall from Giroux on the PP... You know, if you can.

They've done a lot of switching around of D pairings, basically just focusing thus far on putting a new guy with a returning player when possible. The forward lines listed below -- with the exception of the fourth line, which has shuffled around a bit -- have been the same in the first on-ice session both days.

They've been running five lines and four D pairs in practice, but you can pretty much get a sense of who is on the inside track for a job and who's on the outside.

These have been pretty set:
Hartnell - Giroux - B. Schenn
Fedotenko - Read - Simmonds
Talbot - Couturier - Voracek

Today, there was a fourth line of Sestito-Laughton-Rinaldo. The fifth line was McGinn-Wellwood-Shelley. Yesterday, McGinn saw time with the Laughton line. Wellwood has played PKing role on special teams drilled and mixed in on some reps with other lines. Shelley, as he did last year, gets mixed and matched in both as a winger and lined up as a defenseman if one of the D is not taking a rep.

In terms of defense pairings, Timonen has been with Luke Schenn both days. Everything else has been shuffled around in the two days to date (including changing up the pairings in the second session on day one) and I don't think means much at this point. In terms of other pairings in Monday's practice, they paired Coburn with Meszaros, Grossmann with Gervais and Lilja with Foster.

Man...if Luke can learn from playing with Timonen and occasionally advice from Pronger off the ice he could really turn into something special

don't we tend to use three forward pairings on the pk, kind of a 40/40/20 split

Perry still pisses me off when he headshotted Giroux as a rookie.

"So this is how you kill a guy and get away with it..."

On the pk thing, I think we only use two pk lines, but sometimes a 3rd forward line goes out if we get a lot of penalties in a row.

This will have no bearing, as he will bring up the point that he was on the third line.....

Also I am also excited to see how L. Schenn does this season. I wasnt the biggest JVR fan but even when the trade happened I was iffy on whether to celebrate or yell.

Heaing about how he (supposidly) lost weight, playing on a pairing with Timonen and getting after practice training with Pronger, maybe he can turn into a really good defender.

Pronger likely will be a coach of some sort, but he can't do anything like that until his concussion symptoms subside and his contract runs out.

The shot of Pronger holding the stick is Schenn's de-leaf-ification. Ron Wilson insisted that PKers keep both hands on the stick, which opened up more passing lanes, and thus goals.

LOL this picture is so awesome honestly I really hope Pronger stays on here in a coaching position of some sort, between he and Kimmo the D can learn so so much, I hope Schenn is soaking it all in
