My only gripe with this trade is that with so many teams pining for D-men, why couldn't we get a 2nd? But perhaps the market value for Fistric was lower than we thought, and Joe moved on a deal in order to make room for two D-men he felt were NHL ready.
Also someone made a good point, but there's a very good chance his value could have declined if he was a healthy scratch the rest of the season. We might not have gotten a 3rd for him at the Trade Deadline of his UFA year.
Don't get the hate on Jordie? He's looked good in the NHL games he's played and he seems to be having another solid year with Texas. I do agree one more full year in the AHL will be better for him but I'm fine with him being our 6th/7th D.
Maybe Nieuwy got something else up his sleeve that has to do with trading for a D, who knows
I liked Fistric more than most Stars fans, but I don't really have a problem moving him.
Dillon-Daley
Goose-Robidas
Rome - Larsen
Benn
That isn't going to elicit any cup predictions, but I don't think you could plug the name 'Fistric' in there anywhere and make a huge difference. In light of that and the fact that he's UFA (that we probably wouldn't have re-signed) after this season, I think a 3rd is pretty decent.
I don't like Goligoski-Larsen as a pair ... but absolutely hate Goligoski-Robidas. Larsen took major steps last year, and it definitely looks like he took big steps in Finland. He needs more responsibility IMO. Robidas would be just fine with Benn or Rome.
I'm not so much upset at the return as I am about the simple fact he was traded... D depth is never a bad thing to have and we were already pretty thin
this.
the value is acceptable. how it affects the overall organizational defensive depth isn't.
i think this could have at least waited a day or two to see how oleksiak/nemeth look at the texas v. dallas scrimmage.
Hasn't Benn been doing pretty well on the PP in the baby Stars? He also had some offensive upside last season for the big club, hell his first game he had an assist on Jamie's goal...
edit: 17 points in 34 games (7g 10a), highest points for a D-man on the baby Stars...
This concern over how Niskanen was handled is total bull.
He played next to Zubov and looked amazing, then when he left he played like ****. How's that surprising? He was weak, a turnover machine, and was intimidated very easily.
He was never ready for the NHL when he was here.
I haven't gotten to watch any of the Texas Stars games this year so I can't comment on how Oleksiak looks in the AHL but you're right about Niskanen. It bugs me to hear his situation as the reason for being gun shy about playing capable defensemen in the NHL. Niskanen played well with Zubov and that's really all there is to say about it. He was not a good hockey player in Dallas when playing with anybody but #56.
A third doesn't sound like much but it's as much as we were going to get. Fistric is a 26 year old #6/#7 defensemen who can hit but he's below average defensively and horrible offensively. I like Benn far better as a 7th defensemen. He's better defensively and he actually has an offensive game. I don't mind having him on the roster.
Or they can have him as the #8, bring up Oleksiak to play top 6 minutes and have Rome play 7th defensemen.
I really don't' care if Jordie is our 7th. I think Rome is passable enough for a #6. It's what Gulutzan does with them that scares me.

Doesn't really bother me, if Oleksiak is the first call up.
I don't see our D-pairings shaking out like that, or at least I seriously hope they don't. Goligoski with Robidas would be a disaster and Larsen playing 3rd pairing minutes would be a waste of one of the better defensemen on the team.
I'm not too high on a Goose-Larsen pair anymore. I don't think we can expect Dillon to come in here and be consistent for top 4 duty (God I hope it happens). What about this?
Daley-Larsen
Goose-Dillon
Robidas-Rome/Benn
Not sure about Larsen being in the top 2, but we'll see.

I don't like any of our players in the top 2. Alas what can you do.
I don't mind those pairings terribly, but we know Gulutzan won't play Larsen as his top unit.

I don't get the hate towards him. I thought he did great during his short stay with Dallas last year.

Agree, I think it's pretty undeserved. Coming in last season, NHL debut, I think he did quite well and really want to see more of him.
Edit: now that I think of it, Benn wouldn't be a bad option for the 2nd unit on the PP... didn't they try using Robidas a lot near the end of last season? Worst choice ever.
I'm okay with this move. Have the strangest feeling we'll be acquiring an expensive defender soon (hoping it's Bouwmeester and not Redden) for whatever reason, but I'm probably wrong as usual.
Happy for Fistric, and glad we got something for him. Don't see the problem with the D. Dropping a #6 will not make a huge impact. If our D was gonna suck this year, they'd suck with or without him. And while I really do like Fistric, I think Rome is a better option at #6.
That, and this means Jo. Benn might stick with the team full time, and that's just another thing to try and use for Benn is sign the contract we want him to. That certainly wasn't the deciding factor behind this deal, but it definitely didn't stop it.
I guess Jordie Benn is making the team as the #7. I don't think he's ready for that. We'll have to see what Rome's got as well, not convinced he's a real #6 either. The D is thin as cheesecloth.
Joe has really subtracted almost all of the team's physicality. I know we make fun of it, but this is one of the least "tough to play against" teams in the entire league now.
They had damn well better be able to score, and score often.
Agreed. I always thought Fistric was not used correctly here. His grit and decent defense would be useful on this team this season. Gonna miss those hits

i'll miss the big hits, but i won't miss him getting out of position and getting burned because he's looking for a big hit.
