MAB and Lee...hmm...they just signed him for two more years and he's effectively the odd man out.

Cory Conacher after he played Monday on a line with his idol, Vinny Lecavalier: "It's very exciting. I'm short of breath it's so exciting"
Quote:
Lightning coach Guy Boucher on Conacher: "He's got speed. He did a good job. He pushed the pace with them. That's what I'm looking for."
Quote:
They have 2 openings at F and he's in a high-profile spot. On him, but he has good chance RT @mirtle: Conacher make the team?

Quote:
“It’s a dream to be here,” Conacher said. “There are so many guys in Syracuse right now who could have been in my spot, so I’m just trying to represent the [Crunch] organization well and show the management here in Tampa Bay that I’m willing to take that next step.”
http://video.lightning.nhl.com/video...93021&catid=-6
Conacher:
Quote:
"It's important for me to just save the same mentality I still have to make the team. It's something that I'm going to have to beat a lot of guys out to do that. There's only a couple forwards up from Syracuse but there could have been a lot more. If we don't represent them well they could easily pick guys out of from Syracuse like I said. I got the chance to play with Lecavalier and Purcell both yesterday and today and I just have to prove to the coaching staff that I can fit a role on their line and get the lose pucks for them and go hard to the net and make plays happen for those guys. You never know. It's all about keeping the coaches happy and doing the little things that they want you to do and developing as a player as well. With my size, it's all about working hard. You see a guy like St. Louis and he didn't get here by just showing up. He's a guy who works hard everyday and he spent those years in the east coast or in the AHL or wherever he did and he worked hard to get where he is now and a lot of people like to say I'm just like him but I have a ways to go to even be in the same boat as him. He's done amazing things and the reason why I've lived the dream a little bit and got to where I am now. Just from seeing his work ethic makes me work even harder now. It shows it doesn't matter how big or small you are, it's just the way you work and ow you are as a player and even a guy off the ice. Coaches look at that stuff and it's important to be a good teammate and that's important."
http://video.lightning.nhl.com/video...=791&id=193023

Boucher:
Quote:
"Right now every player that's in this camp is getting a real look. We're not trying to fill jerseys, we're really looking at what every player can do. There's holes that we want to plug definitely. It's going to be a fight."

actual video of Lightning training camp.

related:

I believe this actually outlines the checklist for a complete player:
Being a man
Having all the strength of a raging fire
Being as swift as the coursing river
Having the force of a great typhoon
Being mysterious as the dark side of the moon

Also take note how Mulan training camp has ponies.

These are during drills, btw.

The Lightning's account also says Conacher-Lecavalier-Purcell, but from the context, I gather it's referring to the scrimmage.

3 days into practice and Salo not out with freak injury (ceiling tile falling on his head, ice chip from Zamboni in the eye, bolt from the Van Der Graf generators, ...). Gods must be smiling on us.

"I expect a lot out of myself every year," [Martin St. Louis] said. "And if you start giving yourself excuses, you're just speeding up the process of fading away."
Quote:
"Everyone kind of feels a little bit older every year," wing Teddy Purcell said. "But I think he's going the opposite way. He just gets younger."
Quote:
"He's a machine — he's that little ball of fire," captain Vinny Lecavalier said. "You'd think he's 22."
Quote:
"You don't realize how hard you have to work until you watch a guy like Marty," teammate Steven Stamkos said. "That's why he's been so successful, there's a correlation there." (...) I'm trying to keep him young, and he's trying to keep (me) wise," Stamkos said. "It's been a great ride so far, hopefully it's only the beginning and we have a lot of great years ahead of us."
Quote:
"This guy has been unbelievable for the organization and the people around him," Boucher said. "I don't know when or how it's going to be recognized, but in my book right now, he's already won."
Quote:
But St. Louis hasn't dwelled on the opportunities missed in the 116 games lost to lockouts. "Maybe I'll just play an extra year," he said with a smile.

Sounds as if coach Boucher likes Pyatt and Pouliot as anchors on a third line. Boucher said he wants that line to "have some shark to them."

With two goals in the past two days – albeit in intra-squad scrimmages – Wilson has made an early impression, but knows he is being evaluated on more than just the score sheet. The former ninth-round pick of Minnesota in 2004 is used to fighting for a roster spot.

"Obviously, goals are nice; you can't win games without goals," said Wilson, who has 305 points in 389 career minor-league games. "But it's one of those things that just has to be sustainable."

The coaches, he added, "have to see it as you're doing the right things to get those goals and they are not just lucky goals that the rest of the time you're out there just loafing around in spots. So, it's a combination of goals and showing that you are willing to play the way they want you to.''
Quote:
"Well, Kyle Wilson was very good (Tuesday) definitely,'' head coach Guy Boucher said. "I didn't know him, so he's coming in and he's trying to get a spot on this team and there is a huge fight with a lot of guys.''

For the first three days of training camp the second-year pro has been working almost exclusively on a line with Vinny Lecavalier and Teddy Purcell. If Conacher entered training camp penciled in on that line, it might be time to switch that over to permanent ink heading into Saturday's season-opener against Washington.

When asked about how he sees the situation unfolding this week, Conacher wore a constant smile, as if perhaps he'd already been let in on what appears to be apparent at this point.

"They are really giving me a good opportunity,'' Conacher said. "It's really been a dream to play in the NHL so it's important for me to take advantage of this and hopefully show the coaching staff that they haven't made a mistake by putting me there and I have to do the things that make me belong on that line.''
Quote:
"He has a lot of speed and he is a very smart player,'' Lecavalier said. "I think we have connected right away.''

"It looks like he is hungry and is a guy that can make plays,'' Purcell said. "He's obviously done some good stuff in the AHL, and it's a big jump to the NHL but he looks like a guy that is capable of making it.''
Quote:
"It was important for me to have a good start to the year and show that I'm still hungry for the spot,'' Conacher said. "I was hungry at the start of the year hoping that the NHL would figure it out and they didn't . . . it's an honor to be here it's going to be a good week and hopefully I can do the little things of the coaches like and maybe I can stick around for a little while.''

Chances are he'll be for longer than that.

"We feel in the past year and a half in the American League that he is a top notch player,'' Boucher said. "But I like the fact that he's relentless, I liked that last year in camp and I like that again.''

Less 1-3-1, more aggressive forecheck:
Quote:
That means an ability to be more aggressive in the offensive zone when opponents try to set up breakouts because of confidence the defense will react appropriately. Tampa Bay on Tuesday sent in a deep forechecker with another slightly back to force puck carriers to a side wall. A third patrolled near the blue line and read the play.

On the back end, one defenseman stepped up at the red line to challenge puck carries. The other chased down the hoped-for dump-ins.

Much different from the 1-3-1 system used last season, when the Lightning, with a much slower back line, many times waited for teams to come to it. Against the Flyers in November, that led to the teams basically staring at each other with Philadelphia at times refusing to move the puck out of its zone.

"Nothing drastic," Brewer said of the new system. "You're just always trying to pressure when you have numbers and be more aware when you don't. For us, it's just clarifying the areas you can be more aggressive."

That sound a lot like 2-1-2, which is the other forecheck they've used.

I'm sort of an idiot and will need to see it first though.

and I believe Brewer when he says it's another club in the bag. The Lightning last year were super passive in the zone and maybe overrelyed on their NZ forecheck for one reason or another. Hopefully Boucher thinks he's got the players (and actually does) to play more aggressively.

Washington has a new coach and is trying to learn a new system, so applying pressure should cause confusion for them. Also, Mike Green doesn't like to get hit, so rough him up a bit. Ovechkin playing in a more offensive system now is worrisome. He said he wants to play RW so when opponents collapse on him he would be better able to pass to team mates.

So basically, Guy has more faith in his defense so he can operate a more aggressive forecheck. Interesting...
