Matthew Hackett is their goalie of the future.

Do you sign Backstrom before or after Getzlaf?

Luongo's numbers are a lot better, thanks for showing.

Not that much better.

So Luongo's better, younger, takes on a bigger workload...Yeah, he's amazing, we know.

What if he doesn't make it to UFA? Or signs with another team?

Toronto fans talked about Brodeur, Harding, Thomas and Vokoun this summer but still ended up with no one...

He also has a lot more playoff experience.
I can understand why Leafs fans prefer Luongo over any other available goalies.

Just baffles my mind to think that a goaltender who is the number 1 guy on a team who actually is a threat for a playoff spot would leave said team to join the worst of all the NHL teams between lockouts?

Seriously the only way I see Backstrom leaving for Toronto is for more than 6 million per year. So instead of having a cost controlled tender who has more on his résumé as well taken his team to game 7 of the SCF's is a worse option than a lesser tender for a higher cap hit and is even older?

I guess it makes sense in backwards land. But in the NHL I don't see how it works.

Even if you bring up Howard, Detroit has no replacement for him, new contender for Luongo.
Bring up Thomas? The guy who is taking the year off is even older than Backstrom? Lol.
How about bring up Smith? The guy who just played MVP on his conference final appearance team is going to leave his comfortable position with his goaltending coach he seems to love to join a bottom 5 team who hasn't sniffed the playoffs in almost a decade. Yeah ok.

Oh and again if you wanna bring up Kipper. Go check the Value of Kipper thread. No replacements and than to further prove my point. Look at the acquisitions of their team and tell me they are planning on tanking after giving out fair sized contracts to Wideman and Hudler.

And again one more is Halak, where I've seen most of the same Leaf posters in here as in the Value of Halak thread. Obviously no one wants to help TO out with their problem unless it improves their own team.

For all the Leafs fans thinking about how we expect to much, how successful have discussions with other teams about their(generally inferior) goalies gone?

Why is it ironic to you? I can see why a Leaf fan might like the idea of signing a veteran goalie at the end of his career to mentor a younger goalie here. It's not like he's being signed for 10 years or anything.

Are you being a jerk to leaf fans for any particular reason? I don't see how you are adding to this discussion in any way whatsoever.

I guess Toronto should feel lucky to be considered a destination by Luongo.

We've heard it before.

One Leafs fan was saying they don't want Luongo so they could sign Getzlaf, and now were hearing "we will just sign Backstrom".

The free agent route obviously hasn't worked, and as others have pointed out, most starting goalies are non-starters for other teams.

(btw im a Canucks/Leafs fan, so you can see why I am advocating the Leafs getting Luongo)

Its not everyday you get the chance to fix a major deficiency on your roster.

Backstrom is a good goalie but he also benefits from playing behind one of the most boring trapping teams ever.

Backstrom would be only signed if Reimer had a terrible season. Do you guys ever lose faith in Reimer? How much does he need to lose? I know he is religious, but the way Leaf fans talk there is probably going to be a new religion circling around him soon!

Source? I don't recall reading anywhere that Vokoun wanted to go to Toronto.

IMHO Toronto should feel lucky we have even been listening to their offers. With such a poor record over the last few years and no real stand out prospects, I'd say they are even lucky to be thought of as a destination.
Sure they have the biggest need and have done nothing to address such a need when there was obviously other, though much more inferior goaltenders on the market this past summer, you'd think they'd be jumping at the chance to grab any type of upgrade.

Yet anytime I come in here I see way too many lesser tenders being hyped as rather equal or better than Luongo when stats and talent prove otherwise.

It's not that Vancouver fans are trying to be jerks, it reminds me of being friend zoned by a girl. Sure you're a nice guy with a lot to offer. But Vancouver is the hottest girl in school and our priorties are winning, and you're offering us players from a losing team.
Maybe instead of thinking nice guys finish last because Lu hasn't been acquired, realize that your offers are of Dungeons and Dragons in moms basement, when we are looking at the bad boy who rides a motorcycle.

Unless they are content with the pizza faced nice girl they have in net now, I don't see how they can say Lu isn't the best available option.

Love Lou, but in no way interested in giving up any of our best prospects for him. Happy to roll the dice with Reimer and Scrivens and let this season turn out however it may... Our best prospects need to be developed, not traded (for once)
