Amnesty Buy-Outs Allowable In-Season For Redden And Gomez

Nick Kypreos ‏@RealKyper

Hearing the #NHL #NHLPA have reached an agreement for compliance buyouts for cases like #Rangers Redden and #Canadiens Gomez. Details2follow

With new agreement, 1st buyout window will start prior 2 season opener. 2nd one remains in summer. Cap hit stays 4 rest of this season only

Every team should be allowed to do this.

This season.

No, what's ******** is making buried contracts that were signed pre-2013-CBA count against the cap.

It's a one season phenomenon. This is only happening because they put the amnesty buyouts after the season. "bubble wrapping" will not suddenly become a regular occurrence.

Every team will probably be allowed one of these B/Os before season begins.

I'd imagine that the teams will still have to carry the cap hit as if the players were on the roster for this season. Basically an agreement that the teams gain no advantage but the player is allowed to become UFA.

The Habs and Rangers aren't really going to benefit from it. The cap hit will remain this season I believe. This is more for the benefit of Gomez and Redden so they can explore other options.

Well, the Hawks probably want to buy out Olesz and he is made of glass so do we have to "bubble wrap" him or will they allow him to be bought out too.

Redden and Gomez are different stories.

Gomez played the majority of last season. He was buried on Sunday.

Redden, different story.

Sather followed the rules. Why should he be punished for that? He followed the rules signing Redden and he followed the rules for keeping him in the AHL. Not grandfathering in the Redden situation was BS.

That definitely changes things then. If the cap hit still counts, sure, let them do it.

Agreed, they can additionally be assets to another team. Redden more so.

I can see them allowing 1 buy out this year with the cap hit staying on as if the player was in the AHL.

After the season the cap hit (if the team so chooses) will disappear.

Makes sense to me.

I think it's because the NHLPA was going (or already did) file a grievance on behalf of these guys.

Back to OTT to be the #7 d-man. Gomez to PHX/VAN on a cheap deal.

I would disagree with that. Wade Redden was a sixth defenseman three years ago, who was too slow to be anything more. You think that his mobility has improved over that time? The guy is not an NHL player at this point. No more so than Gomez anyway.

Unless they let all teams do this, it is unfair and this league is slowly becoming a joke.

This. The way it was discussed originally was that each team would keep that cap hit for this season. We're just 'releasing' Redden so he can re-kindle his career elsewhere.

Far too many people jumping to conclusions when they clearly have no idea what they're talking about.

Well if we can buy him out and his cap is gone before the start of the season that is great news.

Larry Brooks @NYP_Brooksie
Appears as if agreement reached as suggested here earlier.Compliance buyout can be used now on Redden with NYR taking 5.6M cap hit (1/2)...
Larry Brooks @NYP_Brooksie
2/2..NYR would take cap hit even if Redden signs with another team as UFA. This option will be available to all clubs (Mont/Gomez).

I wonder if this means there will be no buyout period (compliance) in June 2014?
