I think he'd be a solid 4th line center/13th forward at $1-1.5M on a number of teams. At worst, he's useless like any number of 13th forwards. At best, he has his game reinvigorated and is a discount 3rd line center.

I would have thought a team would offer him a no-risk type contract i.e. 1 year $1mil, however now that the Habs told him to go home, it might not look good for him in the summer, at which point he'll be 33, hasn't played in a year, and only scored 2 goals in a year before that.

He will likely get tryout offers to prove himself before a team offers him a contract.

I believe he will get a league minimum up to 1M dollar reclamation contract for a year... At most two.

He has his horrible past few seasons and sitting for this entire season killing any and all leverage he will have.

I could see a team looking for a bottom 6 forward reclamation that are ether a rebuilding/young team in need of veteran leadership. Or a contending team needing a 12/13th forward playoff experience brought in.

Could his career be over? Possibly, he is in his 30's and has had his big pay day. Is it over? If he wants to play, I think he will still be in the NHL. But he is going to have to redefine himself to continue playing, no longer a top center, but a depth forward that can bring in leadership, knowledge, and playoff experience.

I could see a situation where it would be a good risk for the Yotes. At league minimum, in the quiet desert market, in a defense-heavy Tippett system, he very well could be a productive member of the top 9. You only need 29 points to replace Langkow on the Pacific Division Champion squad from last year. Not a superhuman feat.

Maybe they could go big on a one-year deal like Carolina did with Semin, then go small on another one with Gomez. The squad would pretty much be set. And they'd still be spending near the bottom of the league.

I could see him going back to NJ

He had nothing but praise for it, and told Darche (Now at NJD Camp) that if NJD offer you a tryout, go there cause its a great environment.

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
Darche. "Both of those guys (Gionta and Gomez) said if there’s a place you should go when somebody calls you it’s this place."

I wouldnt mind him back for dirt cheap. 1 year About 1 Mil will suffice

Put him on a good team with good quality linemates and he has no choice to produce. Best fit would be Pittsburgh IMO. Or the devils.

First off, I am not a Gomez fan, but he is definitely a reclamation project who would come cheap and possibly pay off in the proper circumstances.

Put him on Detroit's, Chicago's or Pittsburgh's third line and watch him regain some of that identity that he was known for. He needs to go somewhere he wouldn't be expected to carry the load, just be part of the offensive committee who would chip in modest totals.

Big detail people don't realize:

If Gomez doesn't play a game this year, as Montreal plans on doing, come start of next season he will have played 0 games over his last 17 months, and 38 games over his last 30 months. That's a ton of rust for a player who's not very good anymore to begin with.

Any team that offers him a deal has to be desperate. Any team that offers him more than 1M is insane.

Basically, if he wants to continue his career, he should spend this year working HARD on his body and skills.

Come to camp for someone next year and impress. Take a 1-year sub-1M contract and see what happens.

If he's not willing to do that he's done.

take out the pressure of that huge contract and Gomez can be a decent 3rd liner. A one year, one million dollars deal to prove himself. He's still young.

i hope he doesnt get a call by the Islanders, cause you know what would happen if he signed with the Islanders.. he would score 2 goals everytime they would play the Rangers.

As a UFA now, the former Surrey Eagle could I think be signed by the Canucks for this season.

I wouldn't mind having the Rangers sign him for 700K or so.

If he was available for this season I'd love the Ducks to sign him for 1 yr 1 mill max. Guy has heart, just overpaid. Maybe he'd be more comfortable in a market with little to no media.

Perfect fits would be in the Devils or Coyote's systems.
