Ottawa on the verge of settling on a name.... the "Red Blacks?"
Ottawa's new CFL team, one which has been delayed years already for a variety of issues, might be on the verge of finally deciding on a name. The original Ottawa CFL team was called the "Rough Riders," but with Saskatchewan being the "Roughriders," probably not interested in having two essentially identical team names in such a small league again (they're not the SEC, after all). Their second team was the "Renegades," but that never really seemed to be that popular of a choice, from what I've heard.
So, they're likely going with a new name.... the.... "Red Blacks?"
The reaction's apparently been lukewarm, and it does sound a bit off.... but, I do have to admit that I kind of like it, for reasons I can't really explain.
And is it odd that I'd also think that making it one word would be better? The Ottawa Redblacks?
EDIT: ..... and I just saw it in one word together for the first time.... I can't put my finger on it, but something just doesn't feel right with it....
Odd feeling, I like-ish the name, but there's something off-putting about it, too....
There aren't many choices that aren't obvious. Maybe the Capitals? Or just Ottawa Canadian Football Club? Either of those would be better than the Red Blacks.
As for Red Blacks... I get it, but.. ugh. Any CFL fan knew their colours would be red and black anyway so why name the team that? Besides, Russ Jackson doesn't like it, so it should end right there. I do like the sound of "Ottawa Rouge et Noir", though.
At the endof the day, if it means they're able to but a big "R" on their helmets, I'm for it.
The best alternative that isn't Rough Riders, is still Renegades IMHO. Too bad it has a lot of negative baggage though.
RedBlacks is growing on me I hate to admit. When I first heard it I thought it was horrible. Now I've progressed to 'can live with it' verging on 'might like it given enough time'. Of the list, I'd probably go with Raftsmen or Voyageurs.
Either way, the name has to start with an "R" so they can use the helmet again. So the Rivermen really works for me. Maybe they don't like that since the Argos are nicknamed the Boatmen.
