Yeah Gomez was brought up in the Luongo thread. If give Gonez a contract offer of one year for like 700K. Low risk, possible high reward.

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,418,333; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (22-man roster):- $118,333

This assumes:

- Malhotra takes a paycut to stay.
- Higgins gets a 600k raise.
- Lapierre takes the same.
- And Edler takes that magical 5m per.

It's over, but some cap massaged either way, and I think it's doable.
Why?

This team has holes that need filling elsewhere - $9 million tied up in goaltending is just dumb.

You also have Tanev making the same. His contract is up at the end of this year.

The expectations for Tanev around here are crazy. He won't be anything more than a 5-6 IMO.

Next year.

FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin (6.1) / Henrik Sedin (6.1) / Alexandre Burrows (4.5)
David Booth (4.25) / Ryan Kesler (5) / Zack Kassian (0.870)
Chris Higgins (2.5) / Jay McClement (1.5) / Jannik Hansen (1.350)
Aaron Volpatti (0.715) / Maxim Lapierre (1.750) / Dale Weise (0.75)
Random Plug (0.6)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis (4.5) / Kevin Bieksa (4.6)
Alexander Edler (5) / Jason Garrison (4.6)
Kevin Connauton (1) / Chris Tanev (2)
Jim Vandermeer (0.6)

GOALTENDERS
Cory Schneider (4)
Eddie Lack (0.75)

63.035

Luongo traded to Toronto for McClement and Toronto's 2013 1st overall pick. There really isn't a lot of room for major changes/upgrades, unless Gardiner comes our way and/or Edler is moved. Some of these totals are conservative (Edler for 5) while others I think are fair (Tanev at 2, Lappy at 1.75 and Higgins at 2.5). Kassian is turning into a very good passer, another year on team on the 3rd or 4th line and I feel he could step into that 2nd line RW playmaking powerforward role we hoped Doan would take.

Why would Gillis trade Luongo for a 4th line center? Unless this is a trade that happens at the draft with the pick being a top 10 pick, I see no reason to dump Luongo for that garbage.

He's already a 5/6-- arguably an above average one, IMO.

I can completely understand people if they expect him to top out as a #4 guy because his toolbox isn't big enough, but every time I hear the comment you made I think it's ridiculous.

The KHL denied Visnovsky's wish to sign with Slovan.

If a deal based around Visnovsky and Ballard could be worked out it would be worth a look. Visnovsky would help with secondary scoring and his quick transition game would fit the Canucks system like a glove. Potential backup plan if Edler isn't re-signed.

Prepare yourself for what I'm about to say.

No, I would not do that trade right now.
*GASP*

Ballard has looked very good in training camp, and I want to see how he does in a few games before I consider trading him for another d-man.

Nobody said anything crazy like he's worth $2.5m or anything but he's going to get a raise.

I just can't envision Keith Ballard outplaying Lubo Visnovsky, at either end of the ice. Visnovsky is 1 season removed from a 70 point campaign - very underrated player IMO.

The cap flexibility going forward would also be very valuable. The Canucks will need to shed salary this summer and this trade facilitates that. And if Edler doesn't re-sign, maybe Visnovsky does?

I would prefer a more physical/feisty guy playing on the bottom pairing.

And I'm not a fan of how Visnovsky handled this whole situation. I don't see him playing with all his effort, I think he just wants to finish his contract and then go back to the KHL.

It's an extreme case. Meant to prove that it _can_ be done, not _should_ be done.

I think the Canucks roster should be left more or less as-is. Maybe a few minor tweaks like bringing in some more depth guys on two-ways. Nothing major. This is going to be a strange season with injuries and guys being out of shape and no training camp really, games all the time. To make major personnel changes based on this season or because of needs during this season, anything long-term, would be foolish. Wait for the end of the season, wait for the draft, it's only a few months away after all.

I want Frans Nielsen from NYI. His point totals go up each year in NY, and I think he'd be a pretty good 3C.

Future 3rd line would be the Great Danes:

Jensen-Nielsen-Hansen.

Way too fun to say.

I'm curious to see how Bieksa will one up himself by using the podium to assist him in a goal on saturday. Stanchion will be traded the next morning for Bozak and a 2nd.
