Under the new CBA a player's cap hit drops by 900k once he gets waived before being sent down/bought out etc. Why should it not apply here?

Because it is an exemption. This was the agreement. I don't know why you are being hard-headed here. If you buy-out a player in the current buy-out period (until Saturday) you do not get the 900k cap relief. You only get it if the player is part of your team past Saturday.

Doesn't the new CBA allow the Habs to pick up some of Gomez's salary in a trade? We could split the difference (3/4mil for the teams) and then that team could use their buy out on him next season if they liked. Not sure the rules on this.

I'm guessing Calgary and Anaheim, who else?

Pheonix, Chicago for sure.

Pheonix was looking for 2nd line centre. Bobby Mac said they were looking Lombardi in Toronto but deal is now off table. Nashville is probably the last one.

@KatieStrangESPN #NYR So in Redden's case, team pays him 100% of salary owed this year. Full cap hit minus $ saved assigning him to AHL

Could this apply to us as well? I'm sort of confused. Judging by Mackenzie's tweet it looks his full salary counts against the cap, but there are conflicting reports.

Team will take the full cap hit on such players this season, less the $900,000 for not burying the player in the minors, but suffer no cap hit next season or beyond.
Less the 900k for NOT burying? I'm confused...

There are many conflicting reports now. Less could mean that they either get the 900k relief or they forego(they relinquish) the 900k relief.

I believe the new CBA is worded as such that they get 900k in cap relief if the player is not on the team's roster or injury list. So no exceptions are needed.

It would be odd if the Habs and Rangers DIDN'T save the 900k. I mean, why incentivize sending a player home rather than buying him out? The reason that this exception was agreed upon was to free the player to play elsewhere, so why give the teams a valid reason NOT to do it?

Looking forward to clarification on this issue. I suspect in the end the Habs WILL save the 900k...

If the difference between leaving him at home and letting him go play for someone else is 900k is cap savings... let him stay home.

I'm glad Gomez gets the chance to play somewhere else this season and I wish him the best, whether we save money or not. I'm sure the whole Habs organisation are too. It was nothing personal, like Bergevin said. It's better like that. For everybody.

If that's the case couldn't the Habs put Gomez on waivers right now and after no one claims him send him to the AHL and then buy him out?

I am not at all sure what the new deal might be with Gomez.

but if the habs do him a big favour and get nothing in return I don`t like it. Why would the habs do this for free. Did Gomez offer to reduce his pay when he only scores 2 goals all year??

I got John Lu to clarify the statement:

John Lu ‏@JohnLuTSNMtl
@andycatz That's correct, although it's not significant relief. Full cap hit this year minus $900,000. No cap hit after this season.

After all the confusion. The Canadiens would recieve 900k cap relief.

I guess it's either the Habs buy him out early to gain a roster spot and Gomez can play this year or let him sit and gain 900k in cap space.

It also gives the team a better image for future UFA.

Habs would open up a roster spot by buying him out as opposed to sending him home.

I don't think it opens up a roster spot. The idea was to demote him and then tell him to stay home. It does clear up a contract, though, I think.

Yeah it does. John Lu clarified everything.

1. Habs would in fact save 900k
2. Gomez wouldn't count against the 50 contract limit.

Double benefit. Nothing significant, but benefit nonetheless.
