Phoenix might be an interesting landing spot for Gomez. They need a 2nd line center, and Tippet likes his two-way guys. If they're eyeing Matt Lombardi, then Gomez isn't any worse.

that said, it's a travesty all around and shows why a salary cap is needed. these guys can't control themselves...especially when contracts are made public. it becomes an arms race. and ends up with this kind of garbage. if you're redden, you take what you can get. of course. but, really, he and everyone involved should be ashamed.

Unless the slide rule has changed in this CBA (and the MOA is slient on it), it doesn't matter if he plays in the AHL or any other league, only NHL games matter.

This buyout rule should just be THE rule, permanently.
You can cut any player you want and remove his salary charge from your cap, but you still have to pay him.
This is the best of every world.
The player can get double-paid by going and signing elsewhere, and he still gets every cent of the contract he was entitled to (a possible tweak is that the original team can subtract the value of the new contract he signs).
The team isn't saddled with a bad signing, but pays a penalty in that they still have to pay the actual dollar value (this is an incentive against signing bad contracts for management).
The only argument against this is that it benefits the cash rich teams because they can take more risks. I would argue this is a minimal benefit, though, because they still can only fit a certain amount of dollars under the cap.
So yeah, maybe the Rangers can afford to take a risk on throwing more dollars at a Justin Schultz, cause if he doesn't work, they can clear him from their cap.... but at the same time, if he pans out, and they are out of cap room, they'll still have to decide between keeping him or Del Zotto. If they can't afford both, one still leaves in free agency to the highest bidder.

I'm a fan of what you initially proposed. I just don't think it would fly.
That is hugely biased towards big market teams with owners who don't care about eating extra money. teams on the cap floor or in smaller markets would never be allowed to do this by their owners. making their contract mistakes far more punitive than that of large market big money teams. eaxactly the kind of rule all the small market owners were fighting to remove from the NHL in the lockout
