It's against the very spirit of fantasy sports, ESPECIALLY keeper leagues.

.025 maybe? I think .01 would take a bit too much away from the value of a guy like Bergeron or Sutter.
i never added my two cents on all this, since i initially said i was against it. in some ways i still am. i don't think there is anything wrong with the league leaning a bit to centers. the way i see this change, is that the teams that suck are still gonna suck, and we've done little to help them and have taken some of the only ways they can helps themselves. the old way rewarded lesser teams by allowing them to focus on other stats, as being good compared to everyone else at say "hits" allowed your team to be more competitive. by taking all this away and going with what huricanista wanted these teams are potentially still screwed which wont help keeping people around. the way it is set up now is fun for those who want exclusively a top scorer league, but there really arent enough good offensive players available for lesser teams to change their fortunes. if we were only protecting 3 guys or something crazy like that, then this system would work great in a 12 team league. we've protected the top 96 players in the league.

frankly i dont want to go to a 3 player protect league, and its unrealistic that we drop to 6 teams - a situation where these rules would be truly imo effective. i think changing the scoring to the point system we are doing now would eliminate some of things that annoyed guys about stats like hitting or blocking shots. those stats would carry far less weight now, but would allow people to still find effective players. whats the point of defense at all this way? who can find 5 guys who put up pts? letting guys be effective in other ways i think helps people stay interested when they lack power. i think if people can find a way for olli jokinen to be helpful, that should be rewarded not scoffed. in a 12 team league hes about all youre gonna find. how about a fraction of a point for a plus, but nothing for a minus? anything really, that adds a few more options for people that dont have stacked teams. after the top few picks tomorrow night you arent gonna find a ton of guys to help change your fortunes.

just a thought. im still in and looking forward to it. i just think we've changed more than we needed to and it hasnt been all for the good.

ps i meant to use dave's post about the scoring system more than this roster one.

The fact that goalies are overrated in the scoring system and we were only allowed to protect one goalie will help a lot with the parity as long as the weaker teams take advantage of it.

The most valuable player in the league last year in terms of this year's scoring system was left unprotected.

agreed it helps a little, but they dont get to keep two so they may be right back in the same boat. only really helps if they didnt have a goalie worth protecting in the first place.

Goalie fluidity + the prospect draft is about all we can do parity-wise. Goalies are overpowered and defensemen underpowered in pretty much every fantasy league, so it's no cause for alarm.

Part of the reason I won last year is because I exploited the rules regarding hits and blocked shots. There are a few other reasons (including lucky breakout seasons from my keepers) but it didn't hurt that I was top 3 in those real time stats due to drafting weird players like Luke Schenn, Mark Giordano, Dennis Seidenberg, and Steve Ott. Point is, not sure if those stats = parity.

The only other idea I have regarding parity is that we don't do a snake style draft. That should be pretty balancing (and I think we might already use the conventional format).

well i dont know that you "exploited" it. when i won a couple of years ago i had the same great combination in all categories. it wasnt enough to have guys for each category, to win you had to have great years from just about everyone including hits and blocked shots. you had a good combination, and it isnt as easy to keep it going as you might think. i had the right squad lined up every year but i only won once, cause every other year one aspect of the team let me down.

just saying in bigger leagues like this to give new people a chance i think you need some of these side categories, and having the point system like we do this year could keep them in control. improving your team through the prospect draft is fairly useless and a painful long term commitment, though goalies will help some. i just hate to see people come and go like they do, to get new people excited to join just to inherit a crap squad with little hope of improvement.

i still dont know if ive had a player i prospect drafted make the team and make my exempt list. pretty sure not one.

The main thing that will help the lower-finishing teams is the 2- to 3-year freebie on the baller player that they got in the prospect draft in the year that they finished low (Kyle Turris not withstanding).

Dave said this morning that - it's a miracle - but yes, all the lists were complete.

On a side note: did we determine that we want prospects to be no longer protected once they turn 24, or did we decide that wasn't worth the effort to keep up with?

I'm still up for debate on that one.

Personally I like the 24 year old/200 game (100 for goalies) rule, but that's just me. Obviously with room for flexibility should someone select say a Dustin Penner/Bozak type player in the prospects draft.

So what would said flexibility look like? I'm guessing that would be a further complication on the yearly verification effort...
