I don't see how you guys think defensive failures is exciting, becasue that is why there are high flying offensive games. You have forwards from Vancouver and Colorado not skating hard back and covering the trailers and players missing their man on man coverage in the defensive zone. Do you actually stop and realize why there is so much end to end rushing and offensive chances? I guess not.
Does anyone care why there is end-to-end rushes? It's exciting to the regular, everyday fan enjoys it.
Non skilled?...Devils have the fastest counter attack system in the NHL. They use thier skill quickly and get their opporunities that way. You try and find a team that moves the puck as nice as NJ, my dad (a leafs fan who hates NJ) said the exact same thing.
There is no debating the entertainment value of a game like tonight, with two highly talented teams that play an aggressive forechecking game going up and down the ice. Relative to a game dominated in the neutral zone, there is no comparison, clearly.
That said, you raise a great point about NJD, that should not be lost. All trap teams are not alike, though some fans, in their distaste for that brand of hockey, perpetrate that myth. And without a doubt, NJD does, as you suggest, possess an incredibly disciplined and effective transition (offensive) game, punctuated by superb team speed.

I think you should if you really care about the game. There lies the reason why the game won't go back to the way it was in the 80's, players are too good and don't make mistakes. Coaches are better so if you don't like this game you better switch now because it is only going to get worse.
Did I say this was a broing game or that there was no line matching, I said it was the same as a Devils game which I like.
Ah, I see! Pray tell, how was it like a Devils game? Was it the repeated, hideous defensive errors by both sides? The defencemen jumping into the rush every second shift? The complete and utter lack of anything remotely resembling dump-and-shoot? The willingness of both sides to play a puck-posession game? This is one of the most ignorant things I've seen anyone say. Low scores are all this and your average Devils game share.

The Colorado and Vancouver statement was an example as to what type of game they usually play. Try and tell me with a straight face that Colorado or Vancouver play excellent team defense. Most of the chances Vancouver or Colorado give up are on the rush after Vancouver goes all in on the forecheck and don't cover their men on the way back.
an argument about style preferences are pointless.
I like styles that displays creativity and effectively shows off a players' talent level, but that's just my preference. I can appreciate a technically sound system, but I don't think I'd enjoy it as much as an open, creative style.

Man you sure make something out of nothing. I give up on this.
Did I say it was, you seem to be the one moaning about Devils being boreing.
This, while not necessaraly my opinion, is one of the better arguements against trap hockey. When a trapping team plays an attacking team it is exciting because there are rushes in both directions, one team attacks and/or there is a turnover and couterattack. Unfortunately, when two trap teams play each other, the result is often hockey with nobody trying to attack. This leads to very "uninteresting" hockey. Also, it makes more sense to play trap hockey against a team playing the trap so that you don't get caught, thus trap hockey tends to remove the offensive flair from hockey, because if you try to do something creative and make a mistake, you will get burned. Most people like to see dazzling displays of creativity, and since trap hockey makes that more difficult, it has a bad reputation.
Actually a fan of good hockey and good story lines.
If you are offended by a compliment toward D. Aebischer, can't help you. Just basing opinion on what I've seen so far (and it's only December, admittedly) this year.
As for the "domination" rebuttal: Yes, Vancouver dominated play, especially in the third. So what? They don't give out points or award Cups for style. They give it for finding a way to win (or, in this case, not to lose). Works exactly the same for both teams. No need to take offense. Wasn't meaning to incite, just observing. Besides, it's a long way from here to April. :p
Ps - Mizral, you make a good point about Auld. Just the fact that Vancouver could have easily won this game with their #3 goalie in net speaks volumes of where this team is. As noted, Kariya, Forsberg, etc. were out, but still a good barometer of the Canucks, IMO. As for Aebischer in the playoffs. One is 100% correct to state he is not a proven playoff goalie. That said, he is not a proven playoff flop either! He simply is totally unproven, untested. (Cleanup work in Game 7 v. Detroit in '02 doens't qualify as playoff experience!) Looking at things as objectively as possible (and you know I love veteran experience come playoff time), I really have a hard time naming many goalies I'd clearly want head and shoulders above him come playoff time if I were Colorado. That is, to the extent that I'd gut the team of major talent to obtain. After all, who among current NHL goalies are proven playoff winners? Hasek, Brodeur, Belfour, and (yes) Osgood. Not getting any of them.
No need to assume that I was taking offense, I was merely asking a question, I didn't even look at your handle but next time I will.
I was going to ask you some questions (if you weren't an Avs' fan) about goaltending but then got sidetracked. Even now I've gotta get going so I'll have to get back to it another time.
I didn't get to watch the game without interruption especially in the third period; was also curious to know how Auld looked in net and whether or not he showed promise of being an NHL'er anytime soon.

They don't...what's your point? You said it was a like a Devils game, not me.

I'll answer that. He did everything you could ask for a goalie to do. He made a few key big saves, most notably on Sakic and Hejduk, and didn't let in any soft goals. He played the puck decently, had confidence, and looked good out there. The Avs did not really pressure him too much, but he had a nice showing. He could certainly be a backup soon enough. He was outplayed by Aebischer, but he didn't recieve near as many chances or quality scoring chances that he had to stop. All in all, a great game for Auld, and I Cannuck fans should have confidence when he is in net.
I can't believe you never seen a Devils game. Funny how most Islanders fans can admit devils hockey isn't boreing but the rest of the leagues fans can't.
You want to see a real clash of the titans watch NJ vs Philly tomorow and Saturday. Fridays game is on tsn.
I cant beleive you are denying it. devils are the most boring team in the league. Why dont you stick to the more effective arguement of "winning cups arent boring for us"
Does anyone care why there is end-to-end rushes? It's exciting to the regular, everyday fan enjoys it.
1. does anybody care?
2. Its the gamestyle of these two teams, not the mistakes. devensively obsessed teams lose offense. its that simple. If no mistakes hockey is the kind you like, then enjoy. I'm happy with this kind of hockey

Well in all fairness Colorado and Vancouver are both top-ten in GAA in the league.

I'm going to be watching the Devils/Philly game today on TSN. It's not too often that we westcoasters get to watch two eastcoast teams battle, especially when those two teams are American. Looking forward to it, fifteen minutes to go. Since there's no gameday thread up I'll predict here:
I watched the NJD-NYI game just before the Nucks-Avs game, what a difference, the NJD game was sooo boring, especially when the other team knows you can't play offense against the Devils, or you're gonna be burned by their counter-attacks. That's what happened with the Isles, that's what happened a week ago with the Avs, they just don't want to play offensive hockey against NJ, they all know, they don't have much chance to win hockey games against the devils playing that kind of games, and that all makes the NJD games so booring to watch.
