Take this for what it's worth. Gretzky was on the ice for 1,235 more goals than against. The first 10 players on the latter list are all HHOFers. Lidstrom is 13th. Robinson is 14th. It is similar to when you look at the most interceptions from an NFL Quarterback? At the top of that list is Brett Favre. I believe Dan Marino is right after him. As strange as it sounds, you have to be a great player to be on a list like this.
So why is Gretzky #1 on the goals against list? Easy. He never played on a strong defensive team in his career. His Oilers were all about offense and whenever he was on the ice it was all about scoring. Not to mention the insane ice time Gretzky had, the powerplay goals scored against him from all the times he was killing penalties and playing in the NHL for 20 years and playing full seasons almost every year. That's a lot of games and you're going to get scored on once in a while. Martin Brodeur has the most losses in NHL history if you want a good comparison.
gretzky could have gotten to 900 goals if he had played 1 more year. his final year he scored 9 goals, he finished with 894, 93 more than howe. no one else has more than 800. jagr and selanne are the active leaders both at 660 or so.

Let's also not forget that he has the highest +/- in a single season and career among forwards. I'm not even sure his +98 will be matched by any forward or d-man in the near future.

The scary one in particular is 1987. He led the league in points by 75. Take away all 62 of his goals, and he stills leads the league by 13
That is insane. Right now being a PPG player is a pretty big deal and you are among the elite. He scored almost a PPG MORE than the next best person that year. Ridiculous.

I always thought that if Jagr had stayed in the NHL is entire career, he had a shot at getting enough points that the "nobody even has as many points as Gretzky has assists" thing. Oh well.
Here's another one: Most points in a Stanley Cup Finals (in 1988) with 13. But the crazy part? He did it playing against the best defensive defenseman in the world at the time and against his shadow, Steve Kasper. The crazier part? He did it in 4 games.

But the fact that he was 75 points better than anyone else in a year proves how ridiculous the records are in the context of the era he's played in. The fact that he has over 3000 points whereas nobody else has over 1900 proves that regardless of era, he was insane.
One of the ones I admire is the points in 51 straight games. On his website it says it was 153 points over that period...3 points a game? Crazy.
Crazier still? He ended the previous year with a 10 game point streak, making it in actuality a 61 game point streak....which totally leaves everyone else in the dust. The previous record before Gretzky? 28 games. Why is it that hockey is the only sport that doesn't carry over personal scoring streaks season to season?
