All completely worth it to lock up our #1 center, and avoid another Parise escapade. Pretty damn excited about this.

This thread is hilarious. So blatantly obvious that a majority of people screaming overpayment haven't even seen Zajac play.

Why would they wanna sign him for 8 years? he isn't a superstar and shouldn't be treated as one(with term) A 4-5 year deal would have been good. Devils are crazy.

Couldn't agree more.

He will fight occasionally, he put up 44 points the year kovy had 63 and we were a mess. Yes he was injured but did you see him in the playoffs?

Devils fans are happy if you're not it cause your mad you can't sign him

A little overpayment, but still great to see him locked up long term. Would have been fine with 6 years though.

For all we know, the Devils just got a really good deal, or they just got completely screwed.

As a Devils fan, I'm okay with committing to Travis Zajac as a #1 or #2 center for the next 8 years. He's way more valuable than his score sheet suggests, and the run that the Devils went on between the end of the regular season and the Stanley Cup Finals last year almost perfectly coincides with Zajac's return from injury. We shouldn't split hairs about the difference between a $5.75 million cap hit and a $5 million cap hit.
I think this deal is fair if Zajac is #1 center.
You don't pay #2 center 6M unless you have another center who is top 10

It's telling that, in both cases, fans of the actual team in question are very happy with the signing. Deals like this for younger talent aren't overpayments. They are solid signing to retain your best players.
One had many years of restricted free agency eligibility left and had shown an inability to stay healthy, the other didn't

Because he's a good 2 way center and has amazing chemistry with kovy? Why not keep them together for a while?

Because he's our number 1 center...have you not been reading?

I know most of you people don't watch the Devils but my god, just read some things before you post...

3rd best player on the team behind kovy and Elias. You pay that kind of player their money especially when they're in their prime and it's doubtful zajac's skills will fall off too much towards the end. It'll only be overpayment for the last couple of years instead of the last 5 like the old long term contracts.

Of course he is. Just take a look at the numbers. Plekanec is also Montreal's best 2-way forward. Not saying Zajac is trash, but Plekanec's contract is pretty good compared to Zajac's.

Why rush into things? Lou loves his long-term deals.

Btw, i am not hating on the player, i actually like Zajac, just not a fan of the term.

Zajac deal includes full NTC. Interesting that lowest year of deal is next season at $3.5 million, perhaps guessing there might be escrow?

The salary cap will be near ~90 by the time this contract gets to year 7-8. ~6 million will be the price of a quality 2nd liner.

He will be our next captain. Also, look at this coming year's FA class, he would have been a top 10 UFA this summer. Great signing as long as he stays healthy.
