Not being in love with the deal does not mean you're not in love with the player. I like Zajac; maybe not as much as some, but that's because my expectations for him to be a mini-Toews might have always been too high. I also think this notion that he makes the players around him better is somewhat unfounded, but we'll see how that plays out post-Parise.

I think having him and Henrique as the middle of this lineup for a long time is a great thing.

But I'm not in love with the contract, so automatically that means I'm not in love with the player. Much like the way someone who's critical of the Devils becomes a "fake fan" or whatever the nonsense of the moment is. Same Internet, Same **** since I started posting in NJD newsgroups in 1995. The Rangers board actually had a more positive response to the Zajac re-signing than the main board? Hell has frozen over.

The only thing this post is missing is a Bobby Mac "Assclown" dropping.

Makes sense, they got to see him more close up than all the other fanbases, they know a good player when they see one.

People act like Lou 'never' tries to sign guys before FA. He DID try to sign Zach, but his agents knew he would swim in money a few months later so they nixed it. Difference is with the new rules, Travis wasn't getting any more money than this, even a 7-6.5 deal (which would have been most likely the absolute high Travis could get in FA) wouldn't be as much as 8-5.75 is.

Zajac's contract isn't good, but Rolston's was? Volchenkov's is? Not trying to start that debate again, but just saying. This is not the worst contract on the team right now. Not anywhere near it. It will be the second highest unless we sign somebody else in the next year.

Lebrun chimes in:

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...al-set-a-trend

"Not sure most people would have pegged Zajac at $5.75 million a year. But I think it speaks to the respect Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has for his No. 1 center, and a strong belief that Zajacís best hockey is front of him. I agree on that."

1000% agree with your view of this contract, but only in the context of "right now".

I think not only this contract, but the Kovalchuk one as well, can only be truly viewed in a few years depending on what happens to the cap overall. These hits could look like genius, or they could stay foolish.

When a player peaks is also crucial to that, naturally, and I unfortunately have to think that Zajac will begin his waning years in the middle of this contract. Not everyone can be like Elias and Marty, and previously Stevens, etc. - we've been spoiled as Devils fans'.

Also of less note - Yes, that actually is Wysh in case any of you guys want to question his validity.

I get some are upset at the amount of money he was signed for. But there is no doubt that he would have been offered more on the free market. Zajac is the typical Devils player and I'm stoked we'll have him for the next nine seasons. Plus you can't risk losing Parise and Zajac in back to back off seasons.

If Zajac sniffed the UFA market then someone would have paid him $6.5 We would have had to pay him this anyway at the least. Whether it was in an extension, or after another scary July 1st like we had last year. That's at the least too. We probably could have been looking at paying him $6 at least had he went to UFA, and had a stressful day or two again on top of that.

The only reason this is even in question is because of the last two seasons. In 10/11 he had an underwhelming season as did the whole team. In 11/12 he missed most of the season, and many of the games he played were during that stretch in between when he came back, and had to be put on the shelf again in December.

I had no idea that was even Wysh, I thought it was just some guy re-posting something he wrote on Yahoo.

Edit: Huh, that was his first time posting in over 2 years.

It's quite apparent some people don't understand the value of:
A. The center ice position
B.Strong 2 way play
C. Faceoffs
D. Penalty Killing (from the center)
E. Continuity among core players.

After a top pairing defenseman, a big, good 2 way center is the most difficult position to fill. The deal is not only good it was a no brainer by Lou.
