Yeah, was led to believe both here and by various columnists that there was a lot of movement just waiting for the new CBA to be signed.

I agree. I thought Monday was going to be crazy by the way the media was talking. I was discussing this with a coworker, and he said the same thing, but then said that deals may not be getting done that were before because of the new rules. If you can also trade partial salaries, that changed the playing field a bit. Can't really say if he's right or wrong, but I could buy it, I guess.

Probably trying out some brand new system or something, but it is pretty funny. See what happens when the Bruins are told not to cheap shot people and rough them up? Can't very well do that to your own farm system players.

Agree. It is a little surprising but OTOH maybe GMs are doing what I thought Shero would do... wait for the camp to end and the first few games played so they can get a feel for who's not a good fit, what they lack, etc.

Good player, but big contract. NTC as well.

Zajac is a great player, but this kind if money and number of years after the lockout we just had? Crazy if you ask me.

And to think for only 3 million more we have Malkin or Crosby.

Yeah that deal is nuts. It goes to show you though that some teams still feel the need to overpay to keep their guy. I'm sure Lou wasn't trying to risk him leaving in free agency.

Zajac's career season was 25G 42A. If you throw out last year, he averages around 18G, 32A. He is the definition of overpaid. But hey, I'm GLAD NJ just threw a big 5-spot into their cap structure for the next 8 years. No buy-outs for this one and no trades either. Love it. Thanks Lou! Way to make yourself less competitive on the open market.

He's a good (not great) #2C if he's got some talent around him, but that money and term is pretty bonkers.

Overpayment...but New Jersey basically had to do that to keep him around. The Devils couldn't afford to see another key player walk.

That is a lot of money but the Devils can't really afford to lose anymore players. I don't think they are going to have any choices going forward and they will need to start locking up their players long term. Henrique and Larsson will be next

Yah they're on the verge of being a rebuild team if they're not careful. I suppose if he continues to improve a bit, that cap hit will be pretty good for the last half of the contract... 8 years is a pretty long time.

If they are out by the trade deadline, it's going to be really interesting to see what Lou does. Elias, Zubrus, Clarkson and Zidlicky are all UFA at season end. 17 million coming off the books and that's not even counting if they wish to buyout a guy like Volchenkov

Maybe they will want Paul Martin back

Eh. I don't think the deal's that bad. He's worth that to their team. Plays in all situations. Has chemistry with Kovy. Default #1C until Henrique says otherwise.

Lou is old school, so the only way I can see Elias being dealt is if he specifically asks to be dealt. He has a chance to be a lifer and I expect he retires a Devil. I highly doubt the Devils are out of it quickly anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they missed the playoffs, but it would be by a matter of a couple points - not a free fall.

So apparantly the Flyers have made Giroux their new captain now. How cute.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/...s-captain.html

First there was Richards a few years ago and now Giroux. Nice to see that Philly still knows the value of "leadership."

Or at the very least, they're keeping up with their tradition of picking total *******s to be their captains (Clarke, Richards, and now Giroux).

Zajac is a very good 2nd line center, and I guess that's what the market dictates for a very good 2nd line center, but that deal is a little salty.

Will he do this before flopping on the ice or is making out like he's been "shot" despite being on the bench? Or will the whining start while he's still laying down on the ice?

Personally I can't wait for the next regular 82 game season (or even this shortened one) when Giroux falls back to Earth and puts up way less points then last year. The amount of main board hysteria, panic, "did Giroux get the "C" too early??" threads and Chicken Little-ing will be glorious.
