Depends on how theyre playing. I dont think Bailey will play center, so Casey will probably not be sent down, but its possible Ullstrom does for Joensuu. OR, Reasoner plays as poorly as he did last season, and hes a scratch/waived and CC is the 4th line pivot btwn martin and Ullstrom once Bailey and JJ are back? just spitballing.

The cap isn't really a big issue for the Isles (as long as we can stay over it)

I really like Cizikas and Ullstrom, and hope they stay the whole season, BUT, Joensuu really intrigues me. It seems like he just needed some time to mature (the power forwards usually need time), he really has had some success over in Europe, so I'd love to see what he could do with some top 9 minutes, as well as I'd love to see him used in front of the net during power plays.

Aurthur Staple held a live chat on Newsday's website and answered two questions about this situation:

Quote:
Does suspending Joensuu and Bailey do anything besides save the team money?

-I'm not really sure, and it's a curious move. I'm guessing if JT had been hurt in Switzerland they would not have suspended him. I can't figure this one out.
Quote:
Can you expand upon the suspensions of the guys hurt playing overseas? As far as I know, no other teams took that route. Why us, and why now?

-Ben -- Like I said, I couldn't say why they chose to do it. You risk angering a player and his agent by taking a stand. Bailey's in his final contract year, so I can't imagine this will help his outlook.

@NYIslanders
Josh Bailey & Jesse Joensuu have been suspended due to overseas injuries. They will come off of suspension once they pass physicals. #Isles

Are all teams doing this?
Kings did not suspend Kopitar.

My guess is that they might have tried to cover up or lie about their injuries.

A dollar saved by Wang is a much higher number than an dollar saved by the Kings, or many other teams.

You may need to read that a few times to understand how profound it is

Maybe it is something to do with waivers.

I can't help but think this could be Bailey's last year on the Island. Between this enigmatic suspension and him not getting a long term deal from Garth two years ago, it seems to me like he will be dealt for some help defensively this offseason. He is going to miss significant time in this already shortened season and I can see one of our prospects pushing for that 2nd line left winger spot.

I can see him being attractive to a team like San Jose. They lack forward depth and even though they have an aging defensive unit, they have Jason Demers who is a RFA at the end of the year and will be looking for a raise just like Bailey. Demers would bring in a right handed shot and some offensive skills and would fit in well with the youth movement. With Clowe likely testing the UFA market this season, they could be looking for a top six winger to play with Thornton or Couture. I could be totally wrong with this and the Sharks could send off Boyle for a nice return and resign Demers with that money as well.

Bailey could very well be trade bait in the offseason. The best case scenario is that he impresses when he's ready to play whether or not he's a part of the future.

i do not like this move with bailey needing a contract. I hope bailey comes back and plays well so we can deal him for some true D help.

Looks like the suspensions are over; http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/transactions/

Is this automatic, i.e. suspensions are for a time and have to be "re-set", or does this mean that both players are ready to come back?

Trying to find word on Bailey seems to be tough and this is the best i came up with from rotowire..
Joshua Bailey (knee) hopes to start skating on Monday.
Bailey is still probably at least a week away from returning to the New York Islanders' lineup. He had 13 goals and 32 points in 80 games last season. Jan 21 - 9:34 AM

surprised the team's SEVEN beat writers haven't asked about this

I'm thinking Bailey, Visnovsky & Joensuu come back on the same day, hopefully the Isles will still be in the hunt.

I am a pessimist... if they come back and we are still at or above 10th in the east, I will get my hopes up.

Wouldn't that put us at above 23? Unless they were immediately put on IR.

Niether will happen. Boulton is playing his role. I doubt they would want Reasoner in Bridgeport with is salary and declining production. I honestly think it will be either Cizikas or McDonald. We will see soon as Staple thinks Bailey will be ready by this weekend. My money is on Cizikas. Right now Bailey can replace the skills that Cizikas was bringing at this point.

Bailey should be an impact player when he returns.
