I remember being told that Sutton was just as bad as Foster when we swapped them last year. That was clearly the opinion of people who didn't know how bad Foster was because Sutton was a clear improvement.

Similarly, I have a feeling that anyone who thinks this trade isn't good for the Oilers is unfamilar Corey Potter and Theo Peckham.

Even if you don't think the 6th D spot makes that much of a difference, it's worth it just to have another buffer spot in case of an injury. One AHL-level defenceman might be tolerable but each one after the first will have a larger and larger impact.

VAN would have gladly given up a late 3rd in order to upgrade from a Barker to Fistric.

From the sounds of things (and the practices today) Fistric might be a #7 Dman for the Oilers as well.
Oh, we definitely like him, but paying a 3rd round pick to upgrade your #7 dman for one year is excessive. You'd have to be sure of resigning him as I mentioned. I think it would be upgrading Alberts to Fistric in any case.

I don't think he'd resign with Vancouver since he's in his prime and probably wants to establish the rest of career as more than a half-time press box occupant. Would be different if he was 5-6 years older I think.

A couple years ago when Souray was on the block and Dallas was one of the rumored teams interested in him I remember Oilers fans wanting Fistric back in the deal. Dallas fans had him as an untouchable. Hopefully he can get back to that point and this will be a jackpot kind of deal. Either way he's going to be a safe bottom pairing defenseman and it keeps Peckham and/or Potter out of the starting lineup. Really like this.

Never seen the term "great" thrown around so much about a 6th or 7th defensemen like Fistric

I remember the discussion--Stars fans demands were off the chart by a mile-- eberle was the guy many stars fans believed was Fristic price

I've always thought the Oilers should realistically be going after some tougher role players instead of the usual "HF super prospect for junk". Fistric was definitely one of those guys, but Dallas fans always wanted the world for him. At least that one post stopped the "Fistric isnt worth a 3rd round pick" garbage.
Doesnt change the fact that Fistric is a tough bottom pairing role player. I think he's worth a 3rd all day long and at the deadline when injuries are piling up he would be worth a 2nd for playoff depth when things get really tough. ****, Steve Staois got a 3rd and a warm body at the deadline.

Rangers should have went after Fistric. Would have been the PERFECT 3rd pairing guy for them.
