The new CBA has done nothing to stop these ridiculous signings.

Yeah, I find 8 years nuts for Zajac! Max term for contracts should have been 5 and 6 years if resigning with team.

hope he likes it in new jersey, cause he's (virtually) untradeable now.

Let the GM's shoot themselves in the foot.
It is going to be harder for them to bury players now if they don't pan out the way you wanted.

Compared to the Kovalchuk signing, I think it's great!

Definitely didn't see that one coming Massive contract for someone who's career high is 67 points. After losing Parise, I feel like they needed to make this move to lock up one of their best young players and ensure he is part of their core going forward. But wouldn't a 4 or 5 year deal made far more sense?

I don't think the Zajac deal is too long, 8 years brings him to 35 years old, and he's still going to be an effective player then.

I DO think, however, that the Devils are going to regret paying him $5.75 for the last 2 years of that deal (those are actual dollars, not cap hit). The new CBA allows for SOME variance at the end of the contract, an aging Zajac at $3mil a year seems respectable. Not sure why Lou didn't get that contract to decline at the end.

That being said, Zajac is going to be a near-PPG center on the Devils, as long as he stays healthy and plays with Kovalchuk. Like someone said: it's a great deal in comparison to Kovy's, haha.

His career high is 67 points. I don't think that's really "near-PPG".

First line minutes and first line power play with Kovalchuk should get him "near-PPG" is what I believe Bonk was getting at. He was not talking about Zajac's past numbers.

Is part of the first period of the Sens game on Sunday going to be taken over by the banner raising in LA.

Though I read somewhere that CBC plans on showing the banner going up.

This is correct.

I don't think Zajac is a PPG guy on his own, but he's 27, and playing with Kovy for the next 8 years, I could see him hitting PPG totals for like, 2 of those 8 years. He'll be close for another 3-4 years.

Zajac's one of those odd ducks: FAR better than a 2nd line C, but not really an ideal 1st line one. He's getting paid like a lower-mid end 1C.

I imagine this is the contract Stephen Weiss is going to use as a comparable when he's hunting for a UFA contract in the summer.

Leafs trade Lombardi to the 'Yotes for a conditional 4th rounder. Pick becomes a 3rd rounder if Phoenix re-sign him.

I have to say, not a bad 1st deal at all by Nonis in Toronto, actually. Considering they took on Lombardi as a cap dump, that's a really good return.

Lombardi had his best season in Phoenix too. I'd say the odds on him re-signing there are pretty good. Probably tired of moving around so much.

I can't remember the exact specifics of what i read but the Leafs retain his 500k signing bonus and some salary.

I consider picks between rounds 4-7 as near equal value these days.

Yeah, but this is the new, Burke-less Maple Leafs we're talking about. I imagine they're going to flex their muscle a little more now that Burke and his "ethics" are gone. Back-diving contracts, trading salary, tendering offer sheets to RFA's... all the stuff Burke (impressively) didn't like, the Leafs will now probably exploit.

500K + some salary in a shortened season to the Leafs is a drop in the bucket.

Also, like WasTeD said: I imagine the chances of Lombardi re-signing in Phoenix are pretty good... I'd say 50/50 or better. If the pick becomes a 3rd rounder, in this deep draft, that's a really good return.

I think their 4th center, Gordon is out, so a 4th for a player thats going to most likely stay is a pretty good deal

AFAIK, Gordon was their 3rd line C.. I think Lombardi gets the majority of the 3rd line minutes in Phoenix. They are REMARKABLY thin down the middle...
