I wonder why Nonis had to wait a day and a half to think this over.

That's my only problem with this too. Lombardi is not a second line center now (can't recall if he was when he was in Phoenix last). It'll still likely to be Hanzal on the first and Vermette on the second (no changes), with Lombardi centering the third (and most likely Korpikoski and Moss). What it does is drops Gordon to the fourth line center spot, which is where he should ideally be and almost ensures Chipchura is a healthy scratch.

Lombardi won't solve the Coyotes' lack of offense completely and like Sullivan, won't replace Whitney's production, but he should help a little bit, giving them three lines capable of scoring (Korpikoski and Moss aren't handicapped offensively either). I don't expect huge numbers from him but he definitely balances the lineup out a little bit and pushes Gordon to where he should be. Lombardi still has speed and can PK too. Might even get PP time; that's for Tippett to decide.

It's a fine trade for both teams. The Leaf lineup was clogged with him and Connolly both being big contracts only looking at third line time. One had to go and it lets the younger, probably better players play too. A third, if he re-signs, which I think is definitely possible based on how he does back, is good value for him. Even if it's a fourth in the end, it's what he was worth. Phoenix got a little bit more offense and got a center, which is their weakest position and he's someone they're very familiar with (management, coaches, and teammates). He played good hockey there the first time and Tippett seems to get the best out of these kinds of guys. Not bad at all, and as mentioned, very predictable. I think we were all just waiting for this one to happen. I know it's one I've been thinking about ever since McKenzie mentioned it.

Next thing you know, Phoenix will be trading for Scottie Upshall and Ed Jovanovski. They're really trying their darndest to recreate that 09-10 team it seems.

Guess it's a good deal for the Leafs. Fans didn't talk about Lombardi much.

I wonder how much salary beyond the $500,000 is being retained.

overall good trade for both teams. Yotes get a player they had success with before and we lose a player we don't need or have a roster spot 4.

Best if luck to him. I still remember his first game back with the Leafs against the Habs and he potted his first goal since the concussion, he had no idea what to do after haha. Seems like a great guy.

That being said, this had to happen to open up a spot for either Kadri or Frattin.

Wouldn't say Kadri's a guarantee yet. Carlyle might see Steckel as a better fit in an energy role, with Bozak/Grabovski/McClement centering the first three lines.

No, Leafs give up a 4th round pick this year due to Lombardi playing a certain number of games last season.

With the cuts and trade today, it leaves the Leafs at 15 forwards in camp. With 14 spots available. It basically comes down to Kadri and Orr. Do you take Orr as the 14th forward and have him sit with Steckel(best guess). Or do you take Kadri and drop a guy like Mike Brown out of the line-up.

I just don't see how these two things would make sense together. Steckel for an important draw, absolutely. But energy role?

Zero chance that Connolly is a scratch. Carlyle loves using him in a defensive, checking role.

Wonder what the other trade was that fell through for Phoenix. That trade also involved a forward heading to Phoenix.

Looks like Lombardi will be replacing Daymond Langkow as their #2 C with Vermette on the top line, Hanzal as their top checking center, and Gordon on the fourth line.

As for Toronto, I don't think moving Kadri to C is a good idea. Grabovski, Connolly, Bozak and Steckel are probably going to be their starting four centers for a good chunk of the season (unless Nonis pulls a rabbit out of the hat and brings in a legit top line center).

Yotes need a C, they know Lombardi while Leafs should clear vets for youth, so good move for both........also Leafs should eat money cause he's not worth whatever he's making ,all I know is its too much

I wish Lombardi luck. I thought that he worked hard last year, but could never catch up after missing a season and most of training camp.
