Goodbye Weiss

New Jersey just signed Travis Zajac to a 8y-$46 million contract and he wasn't a UFA yet. Very similar stats to Weiss. Weiss won't discuss a contract until after the Season. He becomes a UFA in July. Now lets imagine what Weiss would get with 30 teams bidding for him. My unhappy conclusion is we can say goodbye to Mr.Weiss as soon as the trade deadline but no later than July.

If the Devils GM is that stupid, doesn't mean DT and Weiss have to be the same. Devils just probably tried to avoid a Parise v.2.0 with that signing.

Playing 1st line minutes on a team doesn't mean you're a 1st line center. Same can be said for Weiss. Under 4.5 million and he stays, great. Anything over that and I'll be hugely disappointed in DT.

Some additional details about Zajac's deal:
Quote:
@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Zajac deal includes full NTC. Interesting that lowest year of deal is next season at $3.5 million, perhaps guessing there might be escrow?

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Deal goes to $5 M in 2014-15, then four years at $6.5 M per; then ends with two years at $5.75 M per.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Also included in those figures is $1M signing bonus for next season and $1M signing bonus for 2014-15
Keep in mind that Zajac is 2 yrs younger than Weiss. Weiss' salary this season is $4.1M so thats a factor as well.

Give some of Kulikov's money to Weiss. Steve has earned his payday for his countless years of service. The Russian could learn a thing or two about loyalty. Plus, Florida can use a lot more help up front than on the blueline.

The devils don't have Bjugstad, Huberdeau, Grimaldi, Howden, Shore, etc.. in the pipeline. I'm grateful for what Weisser has brought to the team but if he wants to part I'm not really gonna miss him the way I missed Niedermayer, Mellanby,Bure, Svethla even though he has had as much impact as those guys and more. I'll thank him for being classy and not being an ***hole like Bouw and Horton where. But for some reason I won't really care.

I had been thinking he's leaving for bigger money. This certainly doesn't help things.

Not a big loss. He's not even a real #1 center

Even if he's not a true #1 center, it's still for sure a loss. Saying otherwise just makes us look like bitter fans, prepping for something that hasn't even happened yet. I'll never throw Weiss under the bus. Even if he leaves this summer, he stuck around and was part of the beginning of the solution.

He's an extremely solid player, a good person, a helluva golfer and up till now certainly loyal.

That said....he's replaceable.

It kinda is when you realize we don't have a #2 center either.

Weiss is one of the very few exceptions where I would give him whatever he wants within reason.

When it comes to Stephen Weiss and this summer 2 names come to mind...Drew Shore and Nick Bjugstad.

Nonetheless, what concerns me about the prospects for long term success and bringing a stanley cup to our organization in the near future is a commitment from players to stay and our ability to resign them. I don't want Bouwmeester, weiss, or kulikov to set a bad precedent when it comes time to resign huberdeau, gudbranson, or bjugstad lets say.

This has always been a concern of mine as a fan of a non-traditional market team.

To quote Drago: If he dies, he dies.

If someone wants to overpay him, so be it. You don't win championships by paying 2nd line centers 1st line money. But then again, I am a documented Weiss hater, so maybe Im just jaded.

You guys are crazy thinking losing Weiss isn't a big deal. He's our most important forward. We want established scorers for Bjugstad and Shore to play behind and learn from. It will be a step back short term if we lose Weiss to free agency.

Certainly hope he stays, he is an important part of the team and I love the guy. I'll wish him well, so long as he doesn't pick his hometown team. The guys I couldn't stand are all gone.

This is my concern as well. Although when you win, that tips the scales a little bit.

I'm right with you my friend. I feel like he is one of us. That's why I think the only place that might lure him away is Toronto.

I think being almost a year removed from hockey makes it very easy to look at a stat sheet and say 'replaceable' for Weiss. I think that's strongly misguided. Weiss might not have had 30 goals and 70+ points, but how many of those goals were clutch goals when you needed them most? Remember Game 7 with 15 minutes left? Weiss is clutch. He's a leader on the ice. He's incredibly valuable to this team, that's weak enough as it is up the middle.

I dont think anyone wants to see him just get up and leave.

I think we all saw the kid grow up and want him to stay.

The issue is how much are we willing to pay/overpay?

Why are so many jumping ship about Weiss? Maybe he's thinking in his head " I know I want to retire a Panther, and I have no worries regarding my contract so I mine as well concentrate on winning the Cup"
Weiss isn't Bouwmeester nor is he Horton, he's been here through all the bad times with this team and I can't find one single reason why he would decide to go elsewhere as soon as the team becomes competititive.
As far as him and a #1 center is concerned, well who else do we have until Bjugstad and Shore become NHL ready? We've all seen how the team falls apart when Weiss is out of the lineup, so I think he's more important than most are giving him credit for. I am for Weiss as Capt!! And I am sure he as well as Kulikov will be resigned by the Panthers.

He's not that replaceable. Who do you think will replace him exactly? He's playing as our #1 center. Bjugstad? Shore? They're a couple years away at a minimum.
