Wonder what the other trade was that fell through for Phoenix. That trade also involved a forward heading to Phoenix.
Looks like Lombardi will be replacing Daymond Langkow as their #2 C with Vermette on the top line, Hanzal as their top checking center, and Gordon on the fourth line.
As for Toronto, I don't think moving Kadri to C is a good idea. Grabovski, Connolly, Bozak and Steckel are probably going to be their starting four centers for a good chunk of the season (unless Nonis pulls a rabbit out of the hat and brings in a legit top line center).
We have also have McClement at C. Most of us are predicting that he'll either be the third or fourth line centre and likely that Connolly will play on the wing.
It won't even matter how Lombardi does in Phoenix, I like this trade because it's moving an older player for future assets while opening up a spot for one of our younger guys to gain some valuable NHL experience. Best of luck to him.
Good trade for both teams. I love that we're able to take on salary to better the pick/make the trade work. This is what the league needs. Teams especially big market teams being able to take on salary to facilitate player movement in trades. I wish Lombo luck in the desert
Best of luck to Lombo, guy just had a hard time after his concussion in Nashville. If completely healthy, he's a very useful player and possibly the fastest player in the world. The return isn't as important as is opening a roster spot for Kadri who's now playing center again(in camp anyways).
Lombardi had no roster spot; dropping him to the minors doesn't take the 3.5 million off the cap. There is no downside in this trade for the Leafs. They free 2 Million dollars for a player they would not use and acquire a 4th round pick and an extra player spot.
It's not like he's signed to a decade; he's off the books next year.
Just a good Hockey trade..Tor has a log jam of forwards and PHX needs centres. Wouldnt be surprised if Tor dumps another Fwd for picks before the season starts.
Steckel. Burke signed McClement in the summer(a very good bottom line center) as well as having Bozak,Kadri,Grabovski,Connolly...some decent centers, none of which are number one centers but I don't see where Steckel fits in. I'd gladly take a depth dman or a late round pick for him.
