I hope he gets a long look for the U.S. WJC team. He could be a real "X" factor.

Look out for the game against DRU today, could be a nsty game with revenge from their last meeting. Good test for him to stay dicipline and show he has learn from last time.

Lou and Conte did their homework. I hated the pick at first since we have to give one up soon but Stefan has made me do a complete 180.

Same here, I was not pleased with the pick back in June but he's making me like it more and more every day.

Don't be surprised if Stefan makes the team out of camp. He looks like he belongs.

no way he makes the team outta camp, a young guy who relies on his physicality to make plays sounds like a guy who can get ruined by the agressiveness of the NHL if he's not full grown

Do you mean physically wise or maturity wise?

For now has now become the rest of the year, it looks like. He's playing tonight per TGFireAndIce. And that will be game 6.

Not sure he'll actually stay up long-term though. Lou stated that he won't allow the terms of the contract to dictate how long Matteau stays up. He may stay up all year or literally be sent back tomorrow minus one year of his contract.

With yesterday's trade for Lotkinov, I'd assume Matteau would have to battle the new addition for the final roster spot..

How has his offensive game progressed?

When he was playing during his draft year, he was a train on the ice, just punishing players with his hits and forechecking. Insanely built with decent speed, he was a wrecking ball.

But he had very little offensive upside. Average puck skills and not much of a finisher either. His main strength was his ability to play physical, work the forecheck, and make his presence known.

Has his offensive game improved since then?

There's no guarantee of this. The Devils right now have two (every-day playing) spots that Barch, Butler, Loktionov, and Matteau, and Tedenby are competing for at the moment.

seems to be a log jam going on with the Devils right now. I rarely ever question Lou, but I dont get why you would even bother keeping this kid up right now if he only gets 6-7 minutes a game...let him dominate at the Q for a season than bring him up.

He get's lots of chances + the last game was the best I've seen. I think he stays.

If he doesn't it's no big deal. He's not likely going to command a huge pay rise from 900k like a premier player might. He's a utility guy who's getting a wealth of experience + isn't expected to score goals or shut down teams' top lines. There's very little pressure on him, so I don't think it's going to be anything but good to keep him up + training with the men.

Woah, straight up I'm shocked. He looks like he belongs and I was totally wrong about him staying up.

I'm absolutely stunned too.

I was wondering why the Devils would burn off his ELC when he wasn't even PPG in the QMJHL and by reports was inconsistent at times. But I've been very impressed by his play both with and without the puck. Just shocking.

is he the first player drafted from ntdp to play in the NHL the season after being drafted? i know kane was ntdp but had a late b-day and was drafted from the ohl...and then made the NHL right away.

i know that matteau was playing for in the Q at the beginning of the year - but there was a lockout...although, it could be had the season started on time and he'd been at a september camp he wouldn't have made the team.

in any event, it's an impressive accomplishment and i can't think of anyone from ntdp that made the jump so fast.
