1) Redden has another year after this.
2) The Rolston contract at $5m was offset by 2 years of Hunter at $2m per. Plus, they traded him, so the money was a wash.
Basically you're asking someone to sink $10m+ into a guy who hasn't been good in the AHL for years. Make him an offer at $750k for 1 year? Eh, probably not great, but potentially not awful and you can just walk away if it doesn't work out.
The key point to this whole thing is "Bought Out". If Redden and Gomez clear waivers and are bought out they become UFAs meaning we could offer Redden 1 yr/1mil. Gomez I wouldnt touch with a 10 ft pole.

Not to mention, he's owed 5 mil this year and next. Why the hell would anyone pay that money when they can wait for the buyout to happen then sign the player for a million a year?

Unless I'm misunderstanding, the premise behind the original post is to go ahead and make a waiver claim because the Isles have a lot of cap space and they won't have to bid against other teams. If it's to make a UFA offer after they clear and are bought out, well that's a whole other bag of chips.
For those who don't know, they made a special rule so Gomez/Redden could be bought out earlier than the offseason. It still counts as one of their amnesties, they just won't wait for the offseason. So once these guys clear waivers and get bought out, they're FAs.
Seriously. No at any price. Wouldn't want them on the ice for league minimum. They flat out suck. Don't you get that?
Dumpster diving for still-young former 1st round picks who have yet to live up to their potential is ok. Getting aging, declining players is not.
So we trade assets and get screwed over in Visnovsky...where do we go from there?
We pick up Finley and Hickey on waivers. Most people in the hockey world say that if Redden didn't have that contract, he would be able to play at least 3rd pairing minutes. If Finley and Hickey both crap the bed, who else do we look at? If we give him $1.5M and he completely stinks(in place of some other AHL talent or Reinhart being brought up too soon), what did we really lose besides money?

You are correct my friend, and with that said just to be clear to the board I didn't say it would be a good idea. Just an option and one I would not make if I were GM of any team
On a different note, Michael Haley was put on waivers by the NYR, I'm waiting for that 1 kid to start posting on how the Islanders need him and should play along side Tavares.

As per @DarrenDreger, TOR will put Tim Connolly on waivers today.
Do we pick him up? We need forwards
I think we will, staple said earlier isles need another forward via waivers. Makes the most sense and we can afford cap hit. 3rd line center wouldn't hurt too much if he can stay healthy
The Islanders should stay as far away from both Redden and Gomez as they can. They are both washed up and done, just like Rolston. They've made their millions and couldn't care less and neither is needed here.
Connolly though is a more intriguing player who has had some tough seasons lately but could fill that #2 or 3 center spot. Is his contract up after the season?

I don't see Wang taking on Connolly's salary. He could probably help the team (and has actually been pretty healthy for three years now), but $4M (prorated) seems like a lot of money for Wang to spend given that the Isles will be hard pressed to make the playoffs this year.
Doesn't sound too bad to me... Probably move Strome off the first line... But still it gets Nielsen out of the 2C role... That doesn't look like a bad lineup IMO
The more I think about it, the more I think the Isles will make a claim. It would make some sense and the big question is will there be a better player available thorugh waivers before the season and one that can play more than a 4th line role? Hardly. Connolly is by no means the solution but brings potential and veteran presence sorely needed
Connolly would definitely be an upgrade. Always a fan of him. He has serious hockey IQ and would automatically be part of the PP unit. Its only 1 year.
Strome is soooo not going to be here this year. Even all the analysts are saying to "leave them alone"....referring directly to Reinhart and Strome.
As for Redden...he'd make a good third pairing. Hickey is good for youth, but Redden brings experience. He did have a solid 10 years of success. Experience over youth in this case.
Gomez would be a mistake. He can only play NJ type hockey. He's already proven with 2 teams he can't play anything else.
