They also happen to think Anssi Salmela is splitting time between the NHL's New Jersey Devils.... and the MLB's Cincinnati Reds

Or if he went to NYR and played a shut down 2nd line center role putting up even 60 points on the way to the cup.

Hell, Montreal fans would nearly piss themselves if he managed 10 goals this upcoming season.
I'd be very happy for him. He's a good guy.

Agreed as long as he accepts a specific role in the bottom 6. His offense has gone from bad during his tenure in NY to worse in MTL. He scored a grand total of 22 goals in the last 3 seasons, this playing quality minutes including the PP. He was also clearly out of shape last year as his shifts were composed of 10-15 second bursts and would all flat below NHL level afterwards.

I personally see him back with Lamoriello and quietly ending his career as a defensive specialist.

I agree that he'll be back in Jersey, but as a defensive specialist???

His defense isn't the worst, but he's definitely not a guy you put in that position.

You can learn to play defense which is not the case with goal scoring/generating. There won't be any other alternatives for him. He does not belong in the top 6 anymore. He is a smart player and can easily adjust, and he is probably mentally ready with a change of scenery.

I wouldn't mind Buffalo signing him to a low paying contract if they believe Grigorenko will be going back to juniors. IMO he's a better option then Cody McCormick or Matt freaking Ellis at 3/4C depending on where hecht ends up after that.

Not luck, that was skill. Is MTL interested in Redden now? NYR only asking for a prospect like McD.

not since they reported that bogus 3-way trade that was supposedly a done-deal between Ottawa, Sj, and LA involving heatley, marleau, and frolov and stoll.

(Unless they have since revised it and thats certainly possible) I do not see on the link to ESPN that shows he is a Devil. IT still clearly says he is a member of the Montreal Canadians. It says he was drafted by NJ but that's the only thing I can see in reference to the Devils.

Yeah, not sure where peopel are looking. In terms of ESPN, Pierre LeBrun writes for them and is an excellent source.

Want no part of Gomez here. Not only does his play stink, I've always hated the attitude he's displayed in certain games against us. Doesn't seem too fond of the Sabres. Miller and him wouldn't get along either, I doubt.

Gomez has been officially bought out and is a UFA, so thread title can be changed:

Scott Gomez and Wade Redden are unrestricted free agents.

The two players cleared waivers on Thursday and were bought out by by their respective teams; the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers.

Also says he has 14 NHL seasons under his belt, when he only has 12.

I'd be fine with the Sharks kicking the tires on him. I never thought he was terrible, just grossly overpaid.

And just like that, Gomez goes from 4th line centre to stay-at-home defenceman.

I'm surprised I didn't see the "stay-at-home defenseman" pun more with Redden before the "accelerated buyouts" rule came out, to be honest. Then again, I wasn't really looking.

Yeah they removed it. I tweeted PL last night and he got them to correct it this morning!

He has NEVER been good defensively. I don't see this happening.

Could it happen? Sure, anything can happen, but this is just highly unlikely. A team that needs offensive help in the top-6, maybe top-9 will take him. That's why I see Jersey being an option. Who knows how long Henrique is out for and if they bring in Gomez and move Henrique to the wing, that improves the top-6.

Sadly for the Flames, that might not need be the case. Cervenka is out for the time being, and really he was a giant question mark to begin with. Backlund has yet to show he's a consistent top 6, he's young enough to change that but again a question mark. Matt Stajan is Stajan. Entering the season the Flames top center is Tanguay, who hasn't played center in a long time, another huge question mark. Horak has yet to make the team and has shown just as much Backlund. And Blair Jones shouldn't be playing anywhere but the 4th line.

I'd welcome Gomez to the Flames, worst case scenario is he fits right in with this motley crew of centers.
