Since we're talking about top-6, I'd count Grabovski and maybe Bozak if one's feeling generous (although if he repeats last year's performance and stays healthy, that generosity will probably be deserved). McClement, while very good at what he does, doesn't qualify for that category.

That doesn't strike me as being "quality center depth". It reminds me more of the days when we were using Manny Malhotra as a #1C down here.

What would you offer for him? Preferably picks.

And the Leafs trade Connolly for picks why???

Toronto has 6 players who are reasonably capable of scoring 20+ in a full season -- Kessel, Lupul, Grabovski, Kulemin, JvR and MacArthur. They need somebody to get those guys the puck, and Connolly certainly fits that bill.

Connolly? Despite his contract he has been very serviceable to us ever since Carlyl took the reigns of this chaotic mess of a team. I'd move Steckel before I move Connolly.

Nah. No reason to move a valuable faceoff specialist like Steckel.

Barring the ability to get a defenceman or goaltender, the Leafs should probably consider themselves done for moves...probably look something like this in MTL.

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
MacArthur-Grabovski-Frattin
JvR-Connolly-Kulemin
Brown-Steckel-McClement

That's not how it's going to look IMO.

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
JVR-Grabo-Kadri
Kulemin-McClement-Frattin/Connolly
Komarov-Steckel-Brown

Doubtful. MacArthur is still a member of this team, for starters.

With Connolly between Kulemin/Frattin, the Leafs have 3 bonafide scoring lines with no appreciable loss in checking play. When you replace Connolly with McClement, you lose that ability.

The better fit might be:
Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
MacArthur-Grabo-Kulemin
JvR-Connolly-Frattin
Brown-Steckel-McClement

That's 3 lines that can score, 2 lines that can check, the other which can score at or close to a goal per game, and a 4th full of useful role players / penalty killers. If Toronto has confidence in Connolly as one of the 4 go-to penalty killers up front, it's a real nice fit. Grabo-Kulemin serve as the #3 penalty killing unit.

Carlyle has been practising with our top six lines as follows
Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
Mac-Grabo-Kulemin

Not sure about the bottom six though, thinks it's been pretty random. I can see something like
JVR-Connolly-Frattin
Komorov-Mclement-Steckel
Brown

As for Connolly's value I'd say something simliar to Lombardis. Maybe a 3rd round pick, could warrant more at the TDL so we'd be better off to keep him until then.

Would have preferred Connolly over Lombardi, but with the Leafs eating a good chunk of his contract, I guess it makes sense in a prudent kinda way.

This x1000! Trading a capable centre for picks does little for the leafs.

Whoever gets Connolly will probably be happy.

On the Leafs last season he was asked to play 17 minutes a night, PP, PK, wing, center. Basically he has been expected to be our everything guy.

Give him 15 minutes a night and a more specialized role and he'll look a lot better. If Bozak or Grabo go down we will really need him.

I still say the guys to trade right now if we're looking to make trades to open up roster spots it should be Steckel who was made redundant by McClement and CMac who is having his minutes challenged by the addition of JVR and advancements of Kadri/Frattin.

Not true. His contract falls off the books this year. This is the high cap year, next year it drops to $64.3M

Cap ceiling teams will look long and hard at a guy like this, not unlike the Anaheim Ducks did with Jean-Sebastien Giguere for Vesa Toskala + Jason Blake.

LA Kings are a prime example. They already have $54M on the books next season, and with that, only 12 players signed.

They have to sign 11 players (to reach a 23 man roster) with $10M available...

Connolly could be used in many a cap dump situation to a cap ceiling team. Moving him to a salary floor team makes little sense. I don't think there are any teams needing to reach the floor at this point.

Picks for Connolly is the absolute lowest possibl way to extract value from him.

He's cap dump bait, if ever there was a player for it. Plus he's a much better option than just about any player the Leafs would think to roster in his stead.

Guy did everything for the Leafs last year. Carlyle values him highly, but wants to get him into a specific role, not a jack-of-all-trades.

High likelihood he gets onto the Kulemin-McClement line in a shutdown role.

Connolly did everything for the Leafs last year??! I watched every game and this is the first I'm hearing about this. Sure, he was tried in every role outside of being an enforcer because he wasn't successful anywhere he was tried! How is that a good thing? He was signed to be our top center and didn't do anything to show he can play that role.

Trade him for a pick and cut the losses. I could see him being successful on a team like Nashville or Phoenix, but he doesn't have the drive to play in a market in Toronto. The media rips him all the time, which doesn't help his performance.

He's expected to be on waivers. This would be a waste of a compliance buyout considering he is UFA this off-season anyway.

Where is the recall button... So wrong on this one... Maybe someone will claim him, he'll play okay and then be worth something at the trade deadline.

Why do you guys keep putting MacA as the 2nd Line LW over JVR?

JVR is the better player now, and should grow even better in the long run.

I think Carlyle would do 3 scoring lines. It is likely to be JVR-Kadri-Komorav. He wants to keep top 6 as it is because MGK has good chemistry and he knows already that that line works well.
