Good question, I am kind of puzzled by this as a Flames fan.

less to do with cap than with roster spots. Buffalo has a lot of dmen in the NHL right now, apparently have decided pardy was the worst. They have plenty of capspace for this year and he's a UFA this summer. Of course, they also could be about to pull a trade to add 5M+ in cap hit, but that's probably unlikely.

calgary goalie situation is weird. One would make sense, both being waived doesnt make any sense to me.

Maybe a move to give them NHL jobs? One gets claimed, the other is the backup?

Flames letting it be known that Kipper is playing every game this year? Waive both backups?

I know Irving has been horrendous in the AHL this season.

Interesting, has Leland Irving been struggling this season?

then you dont waive the one who you think can be your backup this year.

waiving one would make sense, giving him a chance at another team rather than carrying three goalies. Waiving both doesnt make any sense, unless calgary is working on a trade to acquire a goalie.

Yes. Was sub .900 save % and was a healthy scratch for about a month, came back last week and got pulled in the 1st period.

Could Toronto Claim Irving and maybe give him a backup role in TO? Or will the Islanders jump on this one too

Yeah, definitely. With that said he has been given very little opportunity with the Heat, and has only played in six games this season.

He impressed management last year so much so that they were not willing to expose him to waivers earlier this year and elected to sign him to a PTO instead.

Obviously things have changed, or they feel they can now get him through the waiver wire due to his recent struggles.

I don't know if this has been discussed already, but what exactly are the rules of waivers?

For example, I read somewhere that Tim Erixon was waived (didn't say sent down, but waived). Can teams claim Erixon? Why can a team claim Keith Aucoin, but not a player like Tim Erixon? Is it simply the NHL experience?

Thanks in advance!

that's possible. Brust's been having a great year in the AHL and had a pretty good year in bingo two years ago.

To be eligible to get picked up on waivers a player has to have 3 professional season played, 70 nhl games played (i think?) or a certain # of pro games (120? 150? can't remember).

At any rate Erixon hasn't played enough to be eligible to be claimed on waivers.

My guess, especially with the other guys on waivers, is that Calgary announces three signings tomorrow: Steve McCarthy, Steve Begin and one of Barry Brust or Danny Taylor (Most likely the former).

if tim erixon was waived, anyone could have claimed him. I dont think he's ever been waived though.

Regular waivers are waivers players must clear to be sent down to the AHL. Some teams also waive players when they just want to get rid of him, but have no intention of sending them down. Certain young players, based on age, time of first signing, and experience thresholds are exempt.

Recall waivers were waivers players had to go through to return to the NHL from the AHL. These have been abolished.

There are also less common forms of waivers, such as unconditional waivers and termination waivers (used for buyouts and mutual releases, players signing midway through the season after having played in europe, etc.)

Or at least waive them on different days, so you know they won't both be claimed (not that I think it's all that likely, but it would be hilarious)...

I have a bad feeling that Palmieri will be claimed.

He has looked very good in Houston so far. Could be a good addition to any AHL team right now.

* Leland Irving...got transposed earlier.

Guess that means that Irving being included was an error.

I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Mike Santorelli.

He had an off year, but he scored 20 goals two years ago and 26 goals the year before. And he's only 27.
