If on the off chance both are claimed, the teams claiming them will more than likely have a backup who will soon be on waivers as well for CGY to claim.

Its a low risk move that provides options for CGY.

Isles will claim both.

I could see TO claiming Karlsson and sending Scrivens down, not sure who could claim Irving/

Either way, dont draft a goalie in the 1st round.

So Calgary will just end up claiming the lesser player of all 3.

No its not low risk. How is putting both of your backups on waivers low risk?

Ok great so we pick up some other goalie on waivers if they are both claimed...making this whole waiver thing pointless in the first place

Exactly my point, which is why this doesn't really make a lot of sense.

Karlsson/Irving battling for backup job in CGY. Could go either way so CGY puts both on waivers so either can be demoted if they clear.

Makes sense really. I am sure that Calgary did their homework to see if either would be claimed and what the odds were.

Why not just waive the guy who loses the competition for the backup job? Is Feaster going with the guy nobody wants?

wow - Sometimes I wonder what this guy is thinking.

And then I realize that I don't really want to know.

If I'm a GM I gamble and claim Irving. I give him the opportunity to work with a decent coach, give him some playing time in either the NHL or the A and see what happens from there.

They can't wait that long, all teams need to be down to 23 by tomorrow (can't remember the time). A player has to be on the waiver wire for 24 hours. Clearly they weren't overly impressed by both goalies.

Really? I don't know about exciting but the only reason I follow is because it's interesting to watch a team head in a direction that's the complete opposite of where it should be going.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm in response to me saying "stay tuned"

Which if you aren't interested, why are you in the waivers thread? (not you, poster you were quoting.)

Maybe it's just me, but I would've waived one on one day and the other the next.

Well, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Again, Irving is worth the gamble. I hope Malarchuk is up to the task of working with the consolation prize as backup.

Well thats how most teams would do things....

Isn't the whole point of camp to pick which players are on the team? If they were both so unimpressive that they ended up on waivers, I think it means the Flames have someone else in mind.

What? Then why risk losing both and using an even worse player at backup?

Even if just one gets claimed, wouldn't that just confirm that the rest of the league that you ended up with the crappier player and the better one got picked up?

In the big picture it probably means nothing because lets be honest, they aren't playing much more than 5 games. Problem is, you still need someone. Can't just strap pads to harvey the hound when kipper gets pulled.

Or maybe you can

News to most hockey fans in this thread: Flames have more backup options within their own club than just Irving and Karlsson. No trades or waiver pickups required.

Geez, if I was the Oilers, now would be a good time to be proactive on the whole Khabbi issue and pick up one of those Flames' goaltenders. I like both those guys, especially Karlsson, just because I've seen him more.

More than that though, Irving was seen as a possible future starter..even though he has question marks.

I like this Harvey the Hound idea though, he can use his giant head to block corner snipes.

In terms of candidates yes.

Keep in mind though the only other goalie actually signed to a deal at the moment is Ortio.

Not to say we cant sign Brust or Ramo. Just that leaves us with very short notice should both of them be claimed.
