Benn is good, but will (very likely) never be a Hart winner, Selke winner, etc. Look at all SC winners since the last lockout. Every single one of them has had at least two players who were either nominees or winners of a major award. Why trade our 1st in a very good draft for a player who IS good, but not good enough to be a core piece on a SC contending team.
How comfortable would you feel with Benn as your guy to go toe to toe against Crosby? Toews? Quick? Chara? Datsyuk? etc? Because that's the calibre of player you need to win. Benn, Kessel? They are not that calibre of player.
Can't we PLEASE go two years in a row without trading a 1st round pick or top prospect? Toronto and it's fans ALWAYS look for quick fixes. Newsflash, it hasn't worked for a reason.
Now I'm not saying our 1st round pick WILL be a future major award winner, but at least it has a chance at that, considering how good the draft is and how poor our team is. It should ONLY be moved in a deal for a player with the potential to be or who already is of the calibre mentioned above, but players like that simply wouldn't be available unless for a massive overpayment.
I think where we are separated is our image of Benn. Benn is an incredible talent, great on both ends of the ice, good physical game, good for 60-70 points. That of course is Benn as of right now. He is 23 years old and looks to be growing his game every single year. It would not surprise me to see him break 80-90 points. I see Benn as a Kopitar lite with the potential to meet or exceed what Kopitar can become and that is worth a 1st and a top prospect.
not too bad, but I would want to change Orpik for Despres
The only way we can get Subban signed is to move some salary back too. Orpik is a good physical player and you get a great prospect and of course the first rounder. I think if Despers is a must then he is substituted for the Harrington/Pouliot part. But either way I dont think many Pens fans will want to move Despres, looks like he is going to start the year on the top pairing with Letang.
I don't know much about anyone here aside from Cogliano, but a right sided PMD isn't something we need.
Actually sorry should clarify, Vatanen is a Right Shot, which is what I thought you wanted. Booming shot from the point and a fast skater. Projected as a possible number 2 d-man if he can translate his game to NA. I believe he has also won awards like the Norris as well as breaking rookie scoring records in the SM-liiga.
Holland is probably our top center prospect. A big 2 way player who is scoring at or near a point per game in the AHL and currently competing for a spot on our roster in Anaheim.
Montreal should offer Benn a 7 yr 7 million dollar contract. If they don't match we can tell Subban we don't have the money to pay him. Wait for someone to sign him or trade him for a coupla first rounders. We would have the option of trading Plekanac, Eller or Desharnais to help shore up the defence. Dallas upon hearing may be forced into a trade centering around Subban.
