cyred: IMO, Sustr just didn't have a very good year. Sure, he has the size but didn't do anything that was really noteworthy with UNO.
Well thats slightly disappointing regarding Sustr. What was wrong with his year? 6'8 (or tall ) players usually are the type who a defensive minded with an iffy first pass and iffy skating. Reports were his skating is pretty good for his height. What would you say was his problem?

Consistency and lack of overall physical strength.

In the UNO games that I saw this season (and I saw them quite a bit), Sustr would play really well in one and just disappear in the next. At the pro level, he'd be eaten alive.

Sustr also needs to get stronger. While he has the desired size, IMO, he doesn't just have the strength at this point to compete against the guys in the pros. Now where this was evident to me in watching him was his play along the boards. Far too often, he got outmuscled in battling for pucks. Again, that doesn't bode well at the pro level. He has already indicated that he will be returning to UNO in the fall and that will work greatly to his benefit as far adding that necessary strength. And it will surely be something that the scouts will be looking at too.

Never heard of him.
If the Flyers do indeed sign Mangene, he'll be a great addition.

At Maine this season, he played both forward and defense. And he played both positions almost equally well too. One of his greatest asset is his speed. This kid can move! And because of his speed, his transition game is pretty good.

Mangene also makes remarkably good decisions both offensively and defensively. And one thing that has impressed me in watching him is that he doesn't sacrifice his defensive responsibilities in favor of making borderline offensive plays. In other words, if he sees that there is a good chance to create a good offensive play, he will take it. But if he sees that the opposition has given him and his team little or no opportunities to do so, then he'll hang back and support the defense. This is not to say that he won't take the necessary risks to create offense, quite the contrary. He's just smart about when to do.

He's also a kid that works hard and competes. In the numerous Maine game that I've seen this season, there were few, if any, games that I can recall where Mangene took a game or shift too. He just works his tall off and that hard work has paid off quite a bit for him and his team.

So that's Matt Mangene in a nutshell.

I hope this answers your question.

Really? I'd be shocked if he didn't get an NHL contract. But from the few games I've seen on tv he's your prototypical short scoring forward.

Any new on Eriah Hayes?

I heard he was getting interest from some NHL teams(mainly Chicago) last season. Is he maybe sticking around for his Sr. year?

Jeremy Welsh already signed with Carolina and played in the last game of the season for them, unless you are referring to a different Welsh.

Does anyone know anything about Spiro Goulakos of Colgate? A d-man with 8 points in 9 games (not sure if that includes his 2 points tonight). Seems to be doing pretty well, has good size at 6'2", and fairly young (2008 eligible).

Would he be a name teams might be interested in?

probably not a UFA this summer but what can you tell me on Nolan Zajac? Rookie for Denver this year. Seems to be off to a good start.

Don't forget about DeKeyser, 30 teams will try to sign him this summer.
Hopefully Tampa can get either DeKeyser or Sustr But shouldn't be to big of a problem as Sustr was in our rookie camp this summer and Tampa was reportly one of the frontrunners to get DeKeyser last summer.

Sustr definitely, but Schmidt's size might deter a few teams. Just saying....

DeKeyser is still on just about every NHL team's FA wish list too.

Some other collegiate FAs that NHL teams are looking closely at (and keep in mind that not all of these guys are seniors and this is NOT a complete list nor are the players listed in any particular order):

F Antoine Laganiere - Yale
F Eriah Hayes - Minnesota State Mankato
F Drew LeBlanc - St. Cloud
D Shayne Taker - Notre Dame
F Rylan Schwartz - Colorado College

and F Ryan Walters - Nebraska-Omaha (from what I know/have heard, there are only a handful of NHL teams looking at him right now, but since he currently leads the nation in scoring, I've included him)

Beyond those guys, who are other likely candidates to get signed?

Interested to hear what HFBers perceive the value of the above to be if you had to put it in terms of comparing to a draft pick. I know it's not an easy comparator, but would put in perspective for readers the potential upside of these guys.

So...for instance, would we think of Danny Dekeyser as a 2nd rnder in terms of value (early 2nd or llate 2nd?) or what where would you place him?

I watch Hayes on a regular basis and if I were a NHL team looking at him, I'd definitely give him a shot in my AHL affiliate. Am I convinced he'll be a star in the NHL? No, but he'll log minutes and give you a hard working, never quit attitude while racking up the points, and at the end of the day, that's a solid investment.

Any Goalies to check out?

I´ve seen a topic about Hartzell already. I´m wondering about Slubowski in goal and Brendan Rempel, Spiro Goulakos and Steven Seigo on defense. Could anybody help me out here?

Thx in advance!

Couple undrafted sophmore goalies I like what i've seen from,

Frank Slubowski (Western Michigan), Juho Olkinuora (DU) and Casey DeSmith (UNH)

The Freshman Jake Hildebrand (Michigan St) was impressive when I saw him so if he doesn't get drafted as an overager he might be someone to keep an eye on as well.

Only if he can turn things around. He hasn't played his best of late.

Montreal: Hildebrand has been very good, but his lack of size is what hurts his potential to be drafted. If Hildebrand were like 6'2", I can almost guarantee he'd be all over the scouting radar for the upcoming draft.

Hellstrom: Slubowski, as Montreal already mentioned, is definitely getting some looks. But like Hildebrand, he's on the small size and that could deter at least some teams. He's really technically sound, has good fundamentals and plays with a great deal of confidence and composure.

Of the three Dmen you mentioned, Seigo is probably at the top of the three from a FA standpoint. Earlier in his career at Michigan Tech, he was known more for his offensive side, but he's really come a long way in his defensive game too. His skating is probably his best asset. He's not what I would consider as an overly physical type of Dman, but he can dish out some solid checks. He's also got a great shot that's actually gotten better over his collegiate career as far as being more accurate, especially from the point.

As much as I like Brendan Rempel, the biggest problem I have with him is his consistency. There are games where he looks terrific and others where he's non-existent. When he's on his game, he can be a real physical presence and does a good job of shutting down opposing forwards. He has size and uses it well, but he still needs to find some consistency to his game.

Goulakos IMO is one of the most underrated Dmen in the ECAC. He's got great puck-moving ability and is smart in his decisions with it. The thing I really like about Goulakos is his compete level. He seems to never take a shift off and always gives 110%. He's added a bit of grittiness to his game too, which has made him a more attractive FA prospect IMO.

I hope this all helps. And yes, I have seen ALL of the guys play.
