I would try:

Sullivan- Lombardi - Doan
Boedker- Vermette - Moss
Korpi - Hanzal - Vrbata
Torres - Gordon - Chipchura
Johnson

I'd love to add someone to play with Hanzal - Vrbata and drop Chipchura to a part time gig. I'm fine with auditioning Miele or Conner in that role, I just don't think Tippett is. I wouldn't mind Gomez to that end.
I think we are going to see some serious head-to-head competition between Johnson and Chipchura during the eight games Raffi is out. They'll likely be on the same line. Chipchura-Gordon-Johnson. Chipchura has somewhat of the upper hand because he's the more familiar player, but he's going to have to be so much better than Johnson that Tippett decides to move him to his off-wing when Torres returns, rather than just keeping Johnson there. I love Chipchura, but he's probably going to have to show a lot to land that 4th line RW spot. If Johnson has a good first eight games, than Torres will likely take Chipchura's spot. Eight games, remember, represents 20% of the season.

Also, with David Moss' injury history, I wouldn't go waiving Johnson for assignment. He needs to stay on roster, even if he's just splitting nachos with Bissonnette in the press box, because we are going to need him when Moss goes down.

I'd say first eight games...

Doan-Vermette-Boedker
Sullivan-Hanzal-Vrbata
Korpikoski-Lombardi-Moss
Chipchura-Gordon-Johnson
Bissonnette

After Raffi returns...

Doan-Vermette-Boedker
Sullivan-Hanzal-Vrbata
Korpikoski-Lombardi-Moss
Torres-Gordon-Johnson
Chipchura
Bissonnette

If Moss goes down...

Doan-Vermette-Boedker
Sullivan-Hanzal-Vrbata
Torres-Lombardi-Korpikoski
Chipchura-Gordon-Johnson
Bissonnette

Anyway, I'm not surprised Maloney has said the budget is maxed out. He's probably planning on keeping 14 forwards and 8 D all year long. I would. No doubt.

Nick Johnson is on waivers, along with a whole bunch of other AHL dudes.

Who made the roster over Johnson then?

Maybe we want to claim Nick Palmieri? He's basically Nick Johnson but five years younger.

Not so fast...

A little surprised, actually. Figured he would be the semi-talented, big body that doesn't use his size to replace Pyatt.

I was pretty happy with Chipchura late in the year. He grew on me. I'd still prefer to see someone more talented in that spot (and let's not get started on Biz). Maybe we have enough in the budget to approach Connolly or Gomez about a one-year deal?

No? All of those players are on waivers silly. So is Bolduc. Wonder if Miele still has his exemption? Anyways, someone made the team or they plan to sign/claim someone. Or, possibly the ********* answer... we get 8 games of Biz until Torres comes back.

Yeah, but somebody else with higher priority might put in a claim, too. Maybe that's the gamble. Maybe the figure eight games of Chris Brown could work, too, considering he's waiver exempt.

With Chad Johnson on waivers I wonder if they are ready to give Visentin the full reigns to Portland now or if they are hoping Johnson is picked up to make room for Lee?

Also some good news with Gordon and Doan:

I see Connolly was put on waivers. Maybe he will get bought out. More likely send down to the Marlies. But then again, Nonis may do him a favor by buying him out.

If I remember right, all players over a certain age are exposed to waivers if they aren't put on an active NHL roster. So it's entirely possible he gets claimed, but it would have to be for an NHL job or we could claim him right back and put him in Portland. He is a professional journeyman, so it makes sense for him to be a backup in the AHL. He knows his role.

The Coyotes had no choice but to put Chad Johnson on waivers. I was wondering when they signed him if he would end up as the back-up for Smith. He didn't get a chance to prove himself this season.

According to the Maine Hockey Journal on Facebook, due to the new CBA all the teams are having to send players they signed prior to the lockout through waivers to get them into the AHL now like they would normally do in September, regardless if they had played there all season or not.

At least that's how I understood it.

EDIT: That's why Rechlicz and Connor are on waivers, despite the fact that they weren't called up for yesterday's scrimmage.

Whoops, read your post wrong. You're right lol.

Interesting point you brought up, who do you think made the team? Or who you think we would pick up on waivers?

Yes, a team would have to put in a claim and then assign that player to their NHL team. If they then want to put that player to the 'A', he would have to clear waivers again and the team he was originally with has the right to claim him, if he passes the waiver, and assign him to their AHL club over the team that just put him through waivers.

Connolly if he gets bought out.

Only spot we have, in theory, is a #2 or #3 LW spot. Or the 4th line RW spot.

Lines based on Maloney/Tippett comments:

Boedker - Vermette - Doan
Sullivan - Hanzal - Vrbata
Gomez? - Lombardi - Moss
Korpikoski - Gordon - Chipchura

Biz
Torres

I like the idea of Gomez with Hanzal and Vrbata still. Playmaker. Can bring the puck in the zone well. Sullivan is more a shooter, so he would fit with Lombardi and Moss. Korpi-Lombo-Moss is just too scatterbrained a line for my taste. If either Sullivan or Gomez falls, you waive them and move Korpi up, then insert Torres regularly. Or you could just put Miele in that spot too.

#Coyotes assign Brown, Miele, Shinnimin, Szwarz, Gormley and Summers back to Portland. Klinkhammer stays.
