I actually was thinking this too. I mean, I definitely know he's regressed and BIG TIME but could it be he looked so terrible in the AHL because he simply didn't give a damn and knew he was still raking in his money regardless of play?

I can actually see Gomez doing alright in Anaheim or Carolina. He'd be a bottom-six center in both, unless Anaheim was crazy enough to give him second line duty. I'd suspect Carolina would be a better fit. Very low pressure (not that Anaheim has high pressure) and they sent Welsh down and could use Gomez on the third line, which could be where he'd be best at this point.

Despite both these guys probably being signed by other teams, I know we can't expect much. Highly probable there won't be any "resurrection" for either of them and they'll simply get by by being alright-to-mediocre at best.

I actually didn't expect Columbus to extend an offer to him. I guess that defensive depth is always a good thing, but we have:

Jack Johnson - James Wisniewski
Fedor Tyutin - Nikita Nikitin
John Moore - Adrian Aucoin
David Savard

Plus: Tim Erixon, Ryan Murray, etc.

That's 9 NHL caliber defensemen (sure Murray is out for the season but he's still in the system). I don't see very much playing time for Redden without having to send Moore and/or Savard back to Springfield and not giving Erixon much of a chance at all this season.

Could someone clarify, is this just a regular buy out and not an amnesty? I was under the impression that the amnesty buyouts weren't allowed to be used until the off season/summer.

They altered the rule to allow one this year if teams wanted

I'd rather have Redden as the 7th defenseman and have Savard getting minutes at Springfield.

It does make sense. In case Aucoin would get hurt, you could bring in another vet. Not that he'd be any good, but he'd be experienced.

The players association pushed the NHL to allow one this year before the season started for players earning more than 3M once it became apparent that redden and gomez would be forced to stay home. The NHL complied because the players association wouldve filed a grievance against what essentially amounted to a whole-season suspension with pay for no reason.

The lack of surprise is, of course, we were outbid for his services by New York at the time that contract was signed. (And thank G-d for that.)

The lack of dismay is because the top two pairings are set, and Aucoin is definitely on the team. His most likely role would be on the bench, while Savard or Moore goes back to Springfield and gets minutes there. And at that, with a low contract, he would be perfectly acceptable.

There's a subtlety in there that folks keep missing about us. We don't have much top-end skill, but there's a coherent team structure. That's why you keep hearing Jackets fans sounding confident.

EDIT: Or, IOW, what ClevelandJacketFan said.

Okay thanks, haven't checked the business forums recently so I completely missed that.

Isles didn't have any interest in Redden but they are very interested in Gomez.

True. As I said, defensive depth is always a good thing.

Guess it depends on how long the contract would be for. 1-2 years? Great. Longer = bad idea.

Looking like St. Louis is a strong possibility.

I think we will look at anyone who can play the left side.

Depends on the asking price of both White and Redden. I could see us going with White if he's willing to take league min. I would prefer to take a shot with Redden, unless he is looking for 2-3 million. We would have to get him cheap.

This is true, I'm sure Redden has plenty of $$$$$$$ with that contract he signed with the Rangers...

I highly doubt Redden gets anywhere close to 2-3M. 1M at 1yr most likely. In which I say sign him.

Doubt that Redden get's taken in the NHL but I don't see why Gomez won't be.
