Wait, did they actually sign Sami Kapenen?

Alexei Kovalev's one-year contract with FLA is worth $1M plus some GP bonuses. Signing today, will be on 23-man roster.

I guess this is a pretty low risk move, but I don't see Kovalev doing well.

Low risk really. Could help out the PP, but not expecting too much at Even strength. Will always root for him, but expectations are low.

I think he's gonna do just fine... I expect him to get around 45 points this year, perhaps even more if everything goes well. I think if he plays with young players, he's gonna be a good inspiration: his best year in Montreal was in 07-08, when he played with still young Plekanec and Kostitsyn. They were insane.

I'm excited to see Kovalev back, I will be watching more Panthers game this season for sure. Worst case scenario, he is going to give the Panthers 2 points easily during the second game of the season against Montreal.

Still trying to figure out how they signed him though because they were already at the 50 contract reserve limit (when you included Kulikov) so that puts them at 51. Unless another move is going to be announced later, this seemed like against the rules??

I hope he does well in Florida but I just don't see it. When he played with us two years ago he was awful.

Well Kulikov wouldn't count because he hasn't "officially" signed yet. And Vincent Trocheck doesn't count because his contract is sliding, I do believe. So Kovalev will put them at 50. I'd expect a small move this morning to make room for Kulikov.

It's going to take a while to get used to the short season. A 20 goal guy in a normal season will be about a 12 goal guy this year. Stamkos will probably get closer to 30 goals than 40. An expectation of 45 points for Kovalev would be about 25 points for this season.

Yeah Trocheck being a sliding contract back in juniors is why they can sign Kovalev & Kulikov. Thanks for clearing that up, totally forgot that sliding contracts dont count against the 50 limit.

$$#@ I already got a hockey card from what I thought was his last season and put it in my hall of notable retired NHLers binder. Damn you for ruining it Kovalev!

Honestly though they have one of the best farm systems in the league...did they seriously not have at least one young player who could've played instead of him? Don't they still have Shirokov as an RFA?

Honestly didn't think Kovalev had anything left back in 2011

We shall see but I dont see him being anything more then vet filler until a young guy steps up

Veteran and is a leadership/mentor kind of guy. I can't see him particularily effective anywhere even on the PP (but that's why he's getting 1m).

Those were my thoughts exactly. Granted, Kovalev could be a decent vet, provided whoever he mentors doesn't mimic his work ethic.

Step 1: Play great at camp.

Step 2: Get paid.

Step 3: There is no step three.

Mission Accomplished.

But in all honesty congrats to Kovalev. It'll be good to see him out there again.

It would've been quicker for Florida to just throw a million dollars down the nearest toilet.

Glad to see you back. I'll always have a soft spot for, Alex.

Had Sid and Geno been back when you rejoined the Pens.

Best of luck Panther fans and Kovalev.
