A skeptic might say the moves have something to do with the nearly 8 million dollars in cap space created by moving these guys..

Exactly.

Speculation: Every team is interested in Jamie Benn. More than Luongo.

It's a pipe dream, but wouldn't Jamie Benn look good in the Blue and White

HEre's a quick rebuild for y'all:

Phaneuf ---> EDM 2013 1st
{Gunner + 4th -----> PIT 2013 1st}
{Komi + retained salary-----> PIT 2nd (deadline)}
Brown + MacArthur + Kulemin + Gardiner -----> Skinner + CAR 2013 1st
Grabo + retained salary ----> CLB (LAK) 2013 1st

DRaft 2013:
LAK 1st(28th) + CAR 1st(24th) + PIT 2nd(60th) ---------> 10th overall
PIT 1st (30th) + EDM 1st(18th) + TOR 3rd (61st)------------> 8th Overall

8th overall + 10th overall -----------> 3rd overall(CLB)

3rd overall + TOR 2nd(31st) ------------>1st/2nd overall.

There.

Skinner, Jones AND MacKinnon.

Rebuilt and ready to go.

BEautiful!
So we trade Phaneuf+Gunnar+4th+Komi+Brown+MacArthur+Kulemin+Ga rdiner+Grabovski+2nd+3rd

And we get Skinner+Jones+Mackinnon...

So we end up playing the Marlies on our NHL roster, and we lose for 2-4 more years...

If he sucks it up early on, then I guess we might have to explore that idea. I'm not sure if he is still waiver exempt or not (think its 60 NHL games for a goalie). If not, then he won't get swent down.

You've gotta give him a chance first

Dallas added Roy and Jagr, 2 top six forwards this offseason - meaning they are gunning for the playoffs. Why the heck would they then move the face of their franchise, who is in his early 20's? Jamie Benn is the most unrealistic dream this fanbase has been having in quite a while. Chances of getting him are 1/1000th times less than Getzlaf and Perry.

Not ripping on you, but it's annoying to see Benn proposals popping up every few pages, and people thinking we can actually get him.

Benn would be unreal, but hes not coming here... As the guy above me said, Dallas just went after a bunch of vet forwards to take a swing at the playoffs... IT would take our 1st Rielly and Kadri to get him anyways...

This is so horrible. And we still have no goalie. We tore everything apart years ago... it's been 7 years now. No thanks.

Irving is the same age as Reimer, and is on waivers.

Irving lost his job in the AHL this year.

Mark Stepneski ‏@StarsInsideEdge
Stars owner Tom Gaglardi says the Stars are working hard to get Jamie Benn signed by opening night, hope to have good news soon.

nick kypreos ‏@realkyper
sure sounds like #stars deal with jamie benn getting finalized. Latest dal offer i heard was 33m. Look for cap hit around 5.5m for 5/6 yrs

Mike Heika ‏@MikeHeika
I'm hearing that, as of right now, we might want to tap the brakes on Benn in ``a few hours.'' Closer, but still have some gap to close.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
Jamie Benn's agent Rich Evans says his client has no interest in a six-year deal and would prefer 3 to 5 years for term. Still working on it

time is running out

I'm sure we all know by now Reilly was sent back to Junior...

Quote:
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, defenseman Morgan Rielly is being sent back to Moose Jaw in the WHL.

Numerous reports indicate that winger Matt Frattin is not skating with the club this morning and that he has been sent down to the AHL Toronto Marlies. It is not suspected that the Leafs would send him down if he had to clear waivers.

Question for you all - if the MGK line starts firing liking '10-'11, and we are playing like crap (bottom 10), would you deal Mac or keep him?

Keeping him would mean you get 2 really good scoring lines, and dealing him would mean you can get an additional first round pick.

Personally, I would give him a 3 year contract at around the same salary. If Frattin shows he's ready for the party, I'd then move Mac the following deadline.

If we're in the basement with that line on fire like they were, then our focus should be on defense and a tender. I think we would have enough pieces without touching that line to improve.

In saying that, Mac might get you a 16-20th overall pick, might be hard to turn that down.

Mike Smith

Do you guys think there's a good chance Mike Smith hits unrestricted free agency this summer?

He was really good for Tampa in the playoffs against Boston, and I really thought he had a shot at winning the Vezina. He's a big athletic goalie with a very good glove hand and IMO he's worth throwing a big contract at if he has a year similar to that this year.

How do you guys feel, and what do you think he could fetch on the open market if he has another great season in Phoenix?

I'd be pretty nervous giving him a huge contract.

Phoenix and Tippett play a very tight checking game can make goaltenders look great. Just look at Bryzgalov. Smith couldn't stop a beachball in Tampa Bay.

He'd be one of my targets but I don't think his price tag will be reasonable.

Nonis drives him to the airport for a 1st round pick.

Lots of young internal options to take MacArthur's place.

Trade him. He's the type of guy who's essentially replaceable every year via free agency, and is replaceable internally by JVR or Kadri.

Potential winger free agent targets if we even wanted to add another winger (Ashton should be a 3rd liner next year, so should Frattin): Horton, Ryder, Clarkson, Dupuis, Morrow, Clowe, Prospal, etc.

I think getting a ~1st round pick (especially in this draft) does more benefit than losing MacArthur. It arguably won't even hurt us without even adding a free agent.
