Hows the top 9 looking?

Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Vanek - Hodgson - Pominville
Leino - Grigorenko - Ott

?

If so its a pretty balanced approach. I have no doubt Grigorenko can stick if given the proper role. Also Leino was pretty good before he signed with Buffalo so I dont find it that unusual to hear him playing well.

I believe that this will be the line up opening night, with TJ Brennan as the 7th defenceman, other possibilities include Matt Ellis or John Scott. Both Nathan Gerbe(back) and Cody McCormick(hand) are both expected to miss time with respective injuries.

Line 1 (LW/C/RW)

Vanek(26) Hodgson(19) Pominville(29)
Foligno(82) Ennis(63) Stafford(21)
Ott(9) Grigorenko(25) Leino(23)
Hecht(55) Kaleta(36)

It remains to be seen how Grigorenko will do in the NHL but what I have seen so far from camp gives me every indication that he can play and produce at this level. Really knows how to find the open ice and create offense from virtually nothing.

That is the correct line-up currently used in camp, though you should switch the first two lines. Fourth line, if Gerbe is healthy, is listed as Gerbe-Hecht-Kaleta which fits in really well with those other lines and should be able to play pretty well at both ends. Scott will also plug in there. Ellis and McCormick are the other 2 forwards to consider in terms of who makes the team, gets traded, or gets waived.

The bottom 6 is functionally very different if Grigorenko doesn't make the team imo. Hecht moves up to the 3rd line, which is a fine enough fit, but the 4th line then gets centered by Ellis or McCormick and loses much of its potential to be offensively effective. While this shouldn't really factor into whether or not he stays, Grigorenko making this team and playing decently simply makes a very big difference to what this team will be.

Never been more excited for a Sabre then I am for Grigorenko. The last time an 18 year old played a game for the Sabres was 1995, Martin Biron who played only 3 games in 1995 and then didn't play again in the NHL until 1998, so the fact Grigorenko will most likely play the whole season with the big club is an extremely rare occurrence for the Buffalo Sabres. Before Biron I believe the last 18 year old to play right away for the Sabres was some guy named Pierre Turgeon... I'm hoping Grigorenko can accomplish and produce like Turgeon did. I still laugh almost every day that we were able to draft Grigorenko, an elite top 3 draft prospect all the way at #12.

I'd be pretty pissed if he stays if I were him. Considering Buffalo told them they'd send him back if the lockout ended. Which could still and probably will happen.

I wouldn't worry, he'll get him back after five games, although Sabres fans that have drank the media Kool-Aid and believe he's some kind of second coming of Mario Lemieux and the savoiur for an average to below average team this season won't acknowledge it.

Why would I be jealous when I'm a Sabres fan?

He's just not ready for more than a tryout in the NHL and it's not in his best interests to stay in the NHL this season.

To me "final roster" sounds like more than 5 games doesn't it?

If so we traded Kucherov thinking Grigo would be back

No, it means he made the 23 man roster due at 5PM EST today.
Not included in those 23 players are Nathan Gerbe and Cody McCormick, who are on IR.

Didn't Kalinin make it as an 18 year old?

You dont know this, its just your opinion. I was at the Sabres training camp and they have about 15 guys evaluating players, I imagine they know what they are doing.

I also expect him to go back to QMJHL after the 5 games stint.

He's not ready.

I love your reports on prospects, but you're starting to jump the shark a bit lately. Perhaps Lindy and Darcy know a little more that you do about his readyness? You speak with such conviction, which is admirable, but I think a bit misplaced.

That being said, you may still be right.

Ive watched a few of the training camp sessions and from what ive seen he can contribute in the NHL. Lindy and Darcy obviously agree

Do you think Galchenyuk is ready for a 48 game season?

I really don't know what will happen with Grigs, if he performs well then they should keep him.

Maybe it's an opinion, but it's based off of what I've seen watching him play, not stat watching.
For me to be comfortable with him sticking at 18, he'd have to be dominant and clearly ready to move on.
The stats may say that he is, but his level of play isn't there yet.

Regardless, he'll make an ill-advised drop pass the nobody or try to stickhandle at the blueline and turn the puck over, leading to him being on Lindy's ****list.
After that, things will take care of themselves.

he is playing junior hockey where he is far superior to most of the players, its tough to be focused all the time when you are so much better than majority of the league. Those things what you mentioned are not hard to correct. The things you need to ask are does he have the skill, speed and the physical ability, the answer is yes. I don't know if you have made it out to training camp but he has played a very "pro" style of game.

Galchenyuk I don't know... I didn't watch him play this season but I think it's a bit sad he'll start the season on the top 6 in Montreal.

I'm talking about what I know, which is Grigorenko. He doesn't have the compete level to make it this season in the NHL, he's getting better but I don't think he's there yet. Sure, some nights he'll look good, but others, just plain horrible. Of course he looked good during scrimmages. He does look good with the puck when there's no competition and nobody touches him. It gets harder when he gets pushed around. Like I said, he's better at it than he was when he arrived in August 2011 but I don't think he has improved enough to make the NHL at 18.

Can you explain what this means? Buffalo didn't have him before the lockout. So if it ended, it wasn't up to them to send him anywhere. If you just worded that poorly and meant that Buffalo told Roy that they wouldn't keep Grigorenko this season, the GM said this week that he never told anybody that.
