From what I remember, the high # rule for new players was Burke's, so maybe they will be allowed to pick their own number. That may have just been for training camp. 53 is pretty bad lol.

I don't understand how a number could be good or bad. The only thing I don't like is too many numbers in the 40s on this roster. Should be spread out a little more.

It is nearly a general tradition around the NHL these days to keep with that training camp number if these guys do make the NHL out of camp. This wasn't just a Brian Burke "rule", it is more of a loose guideline these days and you'll see a lot of youngsters respecting this rule throughout the league.
Especially with a storied franchise such as the Leafs.
Some guys are very superstitious and think its positive to keep the number they had coming out of camp.

Well it's that too. We do have a lot of numbers available in the 20's, even some in the 10's. There's just a bunch of other options available, so maybe they'll change.
I hate the fact that those silly rookie numbers our young guys got saddled with have become permanent. For a team with 2 retired numbers, things are looking pretty hilarious:
They don't have to stick to them, Kadri has said that he wants to keep 43 and that it will be his number on the Leafs.

Kadri would have had 91 at the time (now maybe he just wants to keep it for w/e reason, maybe he's drunk. Who in their right mind would buy that jersey when 91 is so much better)

whats the problem with giving them their numbers at camp and if they make the team they keep it... Kadri 91 Komorov 87 etc...
