Why would we need 3 goalies on the roster?

In no way would that be a great pick-up, it really doesn't make any sense from our point of view. If this was NHL13 I would do it and trade him for a draft pick, but alas this is not NHL13.

Thinking outside the box, I wonder if Dustin Byfuglien is available. I wouldn't want him as a defenseman, but he could be Sid's right-winger AND he could quarterback our power play. I don't know if the Jets would part with him, and we'd HAVE to dump Paul Martin, but he is an intriguing forward possibility because he doubles as a great PP point man. It'd be like killing two birds with one stone.

They have Trouba coming next year, so maybe they'd be inclined to move Big Buff.

Yea, but Hainsey's a free agent, so his cap hit comes off the books.

Interesting idea, I'll always love watching that clip from the Finals when he chucked Pronger to the ice I have a couple of questions though:

1) What would the Jets want/need from us?

2) Would Byfuglien be okay with playing wing? Didn't he request to switch to defense when he was traded to Atlanta?

I don't know what they'd want, but we have D prospects that's for bloody sure!

I thought about your second point. To compete for the Cup again, I would like to think he would be interested. Besides, if you give him the PP to run, and he's really good at it, then you're pretty much maximizing Byfuglien's skill set.

It's a big cap hit, though ($5.2M through '15-16).

Big Buff?

A dual threat. Winger for Sid and PP specialist on the point.

No thanks. We don't need that

Very little chance he's on the block but I'm a huge fan and I wouldn't mind moving significant pieces.

We're the freaking Sam's Club of D prospects!

He's already won a Cup, but he's still in his prime and hopefully is still hungry to win!!

That's a good point that you're still using him in a defensive position on the point and it lets him play to his strengths. But Bylsma has a way of not doing what we think is common sense so....

Is Winnipeg a team that plans to have a roster that is paid up to the cap limit? If not we could always try to get them to keep some of that cap hit.

I'd rather see a big body next to Sid, but I'm starting to come around to the idea of acquiring Gionta. RHS, speedy, gritty player who's dangerous around the net. Two years left on his contract.

Realistic option if Montreal has another bad season, and they decide to go in a different direction with team.

Kunitz-Crosby-Gionta is 3 guys who play the game in a similar fashion. Gionta likes to shoot, Sid can do it all, and Kunitz would rather be a playmaker. I wouldn't mind a deal for him at all. He'd also fit into the infirmary club we have.

Great deal for STL and an opportunity for Redden to showcase his skills so he can get a better contract this summer. Lucky for him, he'll probably be paired with AlexP. Redden would've been ideal for Letang at that type of contract.

I guess we can scratch Stewart off of that list given how well conditioned he showed up to camp and they won't be in desperate need of a lefthanded cheap D for this season...

Brendan Morrow, Ryan Jones, Nathan Horton, Ryane Clowe, Ladislav Smid and Viktor Stralberg are all free-agents next year.

Gionta's pretty close to done. No thanks. That contract is an albatross.

Morrow is likely done as a legit option, Jones is whatever (I admittedly don't know that much about him), Horton will likely re-up in Boston, Clowe is a wild card but I'd love him here, Smid eh, and I would take Stalberg.

Horton's intriguing but a huge injury risk. I'd love to add Clowe.

Clowe is the guy Shero should target in a trade. The right age, the right game, the right salary level... and a team that will probably be looking to shake up their roster a bit if they're not kicking ass in the WC.

frankly with the capspace and assets Shero has at his disposal there's a bajillion winger options. hell, we even got Calgary fans to acquiesce to a Iggy deal on the trade-board. i think it's going end up being mid-20 year old guy who's buried on a third-line somewhere. i also think Shero is going to grab a real, real old top-four defenseman.

All this Clowe talk recently has me believing it will happen. This is not good

Dupuis & Cooke are UFA's after this year & both are in their mid 30's. These guys have been huge two way players for us so I hope we can have a long term plan to replace them.

We're always talking about skilled wingers but guys who can pot 15+, play great defense 5 on 5 & on the PK aren't as common as you think.

no dice. looks like Galchenyuk is living with Gionta.

Thing is, the questions really isn't whether Shero can make deals this time. He's got the assets, and he'd have the ability to add like 25M in prorated payroll at the deadline. The real question is whether he'd go for it.

I still like the game plan of grabbing Iginla. Pens definitely have the assets Calgary would want IF he asked out. On the main board, consensus was Despres and a 1st. I wonder, though, if they might be more interested in Pouliot, since they said, if memory serves, that they'd have taken him at 11 if he'd been available (they were the other team really high on him). Maybe something like Pouliot and a conditional 1st if Iginla resigns?

My other target remains Kulemin if/when Toronto is out of it, unless Tangradi really pans out. Beyond the usual reasons cited, the cap hit is workable, and it would be another incentive for Geno to stay (not that it necessarily matters).

Can't speak for anyone else, but a top four of Kunitz-Sid-Iginla, Kulemin-Geno-Neal, Cooke-Sutter-Dupuis, and Glass-Vitale-Kennedy (a) would be sweet and (b) would park Craig Adams where he rightfully belongs.

Great thought, but I don't see how/why they entertain moving him, even with Trouba coming up next year.

Not so sure about that. He had an injury plagued season last year, and the team around him wasn't very good. Last first 2 seasons in MTL he had 28 and 29 goals. I'd wait to see what he does this year before calling him "close to done." He's only 33. In a complementary role, I could see him being a capable top 6'er for at least a couple more years
