They added the buyout period coming into this season after NYR and MON decided to keep Redden and Gomez home.

Those buyouts still count against this years cap.

you can say what you want about burke but at the end of the day he was fiscally responsible and left his pal nonis in a good position money wise.

luongo x 10 years is not the answer

I agree with this and I was off the Burkie bandwagon after his 1st year.

If it was enough , Luongo would already be a Leaf. Gilles is holding out for a king's ransom when Reimer/Scrivens play horrible in the opening 10 games..

Gillis is an idiot.

He is gambling the Leafs come out of the gate and lose and he will reap the rewards of a desperate Maple Leaf team.

What he does not understand is that Nonis knows this, and will still not make the deal. The mandate of the season is to let the kids play and see "where the chips fall".

Nobody at TML expects to make the playoffs. It's a bonus. Bell and Rogers board know how to build a business. You can't do it over night. They have no problem with a patient rebuild. They understand missing the revenue of the playoffs for a year or even 2 more, is better if they can make it 10 years straight after, and not make it, miss it, miss it, make it, etc... lasting brand is what they want.

Gillis will get fired this season. Vancouver will fail to score goals with their depleted forward corps. Corey will have bad games for sure. Rusty Lu will lose a few more. They will be a .500 team by deadline. Hodgeson for Zack was another bad move. Gillis signed his death sentence when he signed Lus contract.

Can't wait to laugh in the faces of Van fans who demanded Rielly, Gards, a 1st, Kadri, lol

Nonis would have to be an idiot to trade for Luongo if the first 10 games aren't good.

You have a chance at MacKinnon, you don't overpay for Luongo, lose the chance at MacKinnon and give up young players.

There is no way the Leafs are going anywhere if we stumble out of the gate.

Maybe but, the pressure shifts to Nonis. Then , if anything, Gillies has leverage.

If you ask me, gillies sounds like the desperate one. Van is in the win now mode. TO is years away from the cup. Plenty of time and cap space to acquire that goalie and that 1C. Chances are we sign a big C this offseason and shop for a goalie after. The chips will be set then...

What if riemer comes out with elite play. Gillies might get owned? Nonis said hes patient so lets hope he'll let us tank for jones/mckin

Ill be happy with a lottery pick getting barkov or drouin

What pressure? He just got the job like a week ago. We expect to lose. Most fans are onside with the play the kids thing and just see what happens. Short season everyone just happy that there are games. If we do stumble, there is a nice consolation prize. We'll be aggressive this summer with wads of cash available.

we just tank for the 1st overall pick... NO LUONGO.... he will make us an 8th place team..and we will never get that much better (or worse) continuing the limbo we've been in since 1967.

Exactly! Any veteran goalie coming in a trade or FA will be younger and with a more manageable contract than Luongo's. No downside from Toronto's POV.

In b4 8th place won last year..

But ya. If we suck 10 games in, no sence to go after Lu. We wait until summer time.

What in the world makes everyone think we will get a pick in 1-3? Everyone thinks we will get one of the top three

The only reason Gillis wants to trade Luongo, is because he will have a big cap problem, as will any team taking on his contract.

Vancouver has no capable back-up for Schneider and yet Gillis wants to deal Luongo, what happens if Schneider goes down, will Eddy Lack be the answer.

There is no argument, that Luongo isn't a good goal tender, he is but his age, injury history and horrendous contract, not to mention the price Gillis is asking, this is just, a no go deal IMO.

I believe after this year there will be a lot of good goal tenders on the market but Reimer and Scrivens may prove we don't need one and having a bad luck albatross hanging around our necks, would put us in the same boat that Gillis is in now.

There is bug "BUT" to it though. Van could be in serious trouble without 2nd line in tough Western conference to the point that having Bozak and/or Franson could be difference between making and not making playoffs.

Serious question, why are so many leaf fans against finishing 8th? Brian Burke said this and everyone is all into it now. I always thought finishing 9th was brutal because no playoffs and no good pick. 8th is fine isn't it? Young players get experience, more playing time and it improves the culture of a team.

Good luck with 8th or better. Way too many question marks starting in the net.
