Morgan Rielly and Ryan Murphy are similar in that they are both offensive d-men, but beyond that, Morgan has much higher potential. IMO, Morgan has a much better chance of being an impact player at the NHL level.

I see Rielly's ultimate upside being someone like Kris Letang, whereas Murphy is likely to pan out as being the next MA Bergeron.

Even when both are starting the rush they do not look similar. Murphy is fast but doesn't pick his spots very well and Rielly doesn't have the top end speed of Murphy but makes smarter decisions.

If you watch them, you'd know they are different even when rushing the puck. Did you watch the bronze medal game against russia where Rielly took the puck from Grigorenko and then rushed it up while creating a give and go play with Huberdeau and then passed it to Rattie for a good scoring chance?

If that were Murphy, he would never even think about doing a give and go play while rushing. He would just take it up the ice and try to take a low percentage shot from the side of the net.

Rielly keeps his head up and uses his teammates in the rush when they are open. Murphy usually prefers to go solo and try a shot at the net. If Murphy and Rielly are the same, then you might as well say Karlsson, Doughty, Letang, Fowler and all other offensive dmen that rush the puck are the same.

----Team Canada: Don't like to kick people when they are down, and those were painful defeats for the Canadians. Appraisals were fair and honest. A consistent No. 1 item on that list was that, aside from Morgan Rielly and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins "most guys were ghosts of who they are/who they should be," one NHL scout said.

Finally a smart move in regards to a prospect. Let the kid develop, no need to rush him. He has played minimal hockey over the last yeasr and a half

Except that Morgan Rielly was drafted THIS year.

I am really happy that this organization made the right move. Rielly has played about 40 WHL games in 2 years. He needs more time to hone is game. Skill is there and there is no reason the Leafs need to waste one year of his ELC on a 48 game season.

Pietrangelo and Myers also didn't make the team in their first years. One is now regarded as one of the best D, the other won the Calder and is a top pairing D.

I believe MJ hasn't won a game in regulation since Rielly left.

Realistically, I think Rielly was always a longshot. He needs to round out his game a bit more, and he could probably afford to physically develop for another year or two so he's better prepared for the NHL game. That isn't a knock on him as a player at all, and to even be considered so strongly by Toronto at his age is a statement of his abilities.

You're right, I'd rather him mirror the career of the NHL stud defenceman Luke Schenn.

Wow...Reilly IS the Moose Jaw Warriors. This is why it was such a good decision to put him back in junior. He's going to go back and be the main man there, and continue to develop. Once this kid is ready he is going to blow people away. Just not his time yet, soon though.

Exactly, great points made. The people who want to keep him IMO seem to have this idea that sending him back = failure. It's not that at all, to be even invited to the main camp at his age is a statement in itself. The kid is a stud in the making, he has NHL speed right now, his passing is incredible, and what impresses me the most is his hockey IQ. He'll be ready next season IMO, give him another summer of workouts and training and hopefully a playoff run with MJ and he'll be much more ready.
