Yes. Like I said, he can take a 7m contract and STILL be the highest paid defenseman in the NHL. Playing hardball for a near max contract tells me he's more interested in $$$ than winning.

Ridiculous to question the heart of Lidstrom and this from a stars fan. What about dumping overpaid grinders like Draper and Maltby. You are getting Chelios for basically free. The money is there and not sure he is playing hardball yet just negotiating like we all would.

wasn't that the whole point of this CBA ... IF you're the best you get paid handsomely and Lidstrom IS the best Dman in the league bar none ... 4th Norris Trophy in his illustrious career ... the guy is just that good ... and I'd be pissed if I was the PA and he did take a pay cut

I think you folks are overlooking the fact that Lidstrom is no spring chicken. He's 36 and in the twilight of his career. It's time for him to start taking less money. The Red Wings have already made him far wealthier than he could have imagined in his youth.

Yeah if Blake takes the same range of deal that's $2 million freed up by those two alone. Boughner is gone which is another 900k and there's some possible salary dumping to come. Should be a decent chunk of change to use on the market.

I think Lidstrom shouldn't get more then 6.75 million for no more then a 3 year deal. If I am a GM I wouln't pay any more then that for a 36 year old blueliner. Players at that age are going to have to start taking paycuts towards the end of their carreers.

As an Avs fan I'm all for Lidstrom getting as much as possible from the Wings. I say squeeze em like an orange.

And Seamus has a hate on for the Avs so it's not like his opinion is valid here.

I don't know, I can picture him in a Nordiques jersey without much problem...

But congrats to Avs fans, and kudos to Sakic for continuing to be a class act. It's great to see him continue to play for one and only one franchise.

Very, very big question, who's more talented. Both are exceptional.

Joe Sakic plans on playing more than one more season but the new CBA clause concerning signing 35 year old or older players to more than one year contracts factored into the one year contract

Quote:
"If you're over 35, for whatever reason, if you sign a two-year deal -- and after one year you decided to retire, not that I'm going to, the team's still stuck with the cap number," Sakic said. "At this stage of my career, I thought one year deals would probably be best for both sides"
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2492599

Francois Giguere and Pierre Lacroix read the CBA

"I'm confident I've got at least two more years, maybe three," he said.

Joe Sakic is referring to Article 50.5 B5 found on page 203 of the CBA

Quote:
All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in League Year by a Player who is in the second or later year of a multi year SPC which was signed when the player 35 years or older(as of June 30 prior to the League Year in which the SPC is to be effective),but which the Player is not on the Club's Active roster,Injured Reserve,Injured Non Roster or Non Roster, and regardless of whether,or where, the Player is playing, except to the extent the Player is playing under his SPC in the minor leagues,in which case only the Player Salary and Bonuses in excess of $100,000 shall count towards the calculation of Averaged Club Salary
The NHL and NHLPA did their work on this one.It doesn't matter what the status of the player is after year one of the contract because it still counts against the cap

I didn't claim it was about Lidstrom; in fact, I didn't bring up Lidstrom's name. Also of note, I am not a Red Wings fan. Nice try big fella. Hike up your pantyhose and try again.

What's so funny about rather having Sakic than Lidstrom?

Just watch how many about-faces you see now. Yesterday, everyone was saying how they'd love to have Sakic on their team. Now that he's re-signed with Colorado, those same people will be saying that he's old, washed-up, and they could get better players anyway.

It happened with Forsberg. Everyone wanted him, until he signed with Philly. Then they all had reasons why they were better off without him.
