2013 Draft Selection: Ideal Candidates

For the 2013 Draft, it looks like the oilers have some good fortune as there are players available that can fill holes and not be too far off from BPA. Considering the fact that we will not be drafting any of the Max Domis, or Anthony Duclairs of the 1st round.

Three players come to mind:
-Frederick Gauthier (QMJHL)
-Curtis Lazar (WHL)
-Jacob De La Rose (Allsvenskan)

These three seem to be fine prospects for the 2C role behind Ryan Nugent Hopkins.

Just an observation, but is there anyone else who suspects the oilers may be affecting the o-zone starts and opportunities of Curtis Lazar in an effort to be able to draft him this year?

Jason Dickenson would look good as a number 2 center if Lazar is off the Table.

Valeri Nichushkin would be a great centerman to have behind RNH.

6-4 200 pound center.

We should try not to pick Oil Kings just because they are Oil Kings when there are better players available.

I'd much rather replace Gagner with a proven #2C.

Replacing Gagner with a raw rookie is a step back.

Later round prospects EDM should target...

Bogdan Yakimov - 6'4 , 200lbs kid who played on Yakupov's KHL team. Plays C

Martin Bobos - another Slovak who might be bigger and better than the 2 Martins we have when its all said and done. Ranked ~100th best Euro player available..

Hoping for Lazar first round and one of the top 3 avail goalies with one of the 2nd round picks

Some sites have him listed as a center but I'm pretty sure he's mainly a winger. Anyone watch him a ton?

Biggest need is a 2nd line C.

Ideally we could maybe trade the pick for a comparable 2nd line center who's a little further along?
Doesn't need to be huge, just hard to knock off the puck.

I think if we drafted a 2nd line C they wouldn't be good enough in time for a cup run.

But if you can get an NHL ready prospect drafted in the last few years who could step in I think that's best. Maybe Ryan johansen or jayden Schwartz? Maybe you can package the pick to get a little more?

With Lazar's rankings dropping a bit, I think the Oilers draft him no matter what if they finish with a pick outside of the top 5.

Yes... If we make the playoffs here .. we should limit Lazar's icetime in WHL so he falls in rankings

I wouldn't be totally sure of that. Lazar just slipped to #26 on the Central Scouting list for North American Skaters. If we are picking even in the top #15 he might be a bit of a reach. But there is a long way to the final rankings.

I'm kind of almost hoping he slips, and Anaheim finishes dead last. And get him at #31.

We need another Comrie, but I think we get this one in the 2nd round.

As long as they don't pick a winger with either the first or second round pick, i'll consider that a win.

Wouldn't even have to. He's dropped to 26th in the recent rankings, his stats aren't all that flashy, and he is maybe a bit overexposed to scouts who have been watching him for a few years now.

But the Oilers pretty clearly believe there is a special player there, and may just get an opportunity to draft him whether it's 5th, 15th, or 25th, and I don't think they pass him over at any spot.

Comries out for the season, needs hip surgery. Hip surgery for a goalie must be pretty scary, could see his stock drop some.

Someone who's projected to go around 17-19 in the draft. Pretty much all I care about. Don't care so much who we are drafting this year as where we are drafting.....If we aren't drafting there, I hope we are drafting Seth Jones, with the new rules and all to the lottery, I'd give up on the playoffs for this year if we finished 9th and then won the draft lottery. Tambo would probably get up and literally point and laugh at the other GM's on the panel.

I'll be a happy man if we can get Tristan Jarry in the second round. He's going to be a good one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Anaheim finishes with the 1st overall pick(and legit last in the NHL), we would end up with what is technically the 30th pick in the draft right? Ie another 1st?

I believe you are correct. NJ loses its first round pick this year from the Kovy deal.

I will be cheering for them to tank hard. Maybe they deal both Getzlaf and Perry.

Maybe Monahan or Barkov will fall down to where we are picking, which will be 8-12 range I think.

Lazar had a tough start and is coming around. He was projected to be a top 10 pick at the beginning of this season. Jarry is ranked the 3rd best goalie in N.A. at the moment and is getting better as time goes on. He posted a 16 shot shutout in the prospects game, and that type of performance doesn't happen often in a shoot-em-up type of game. Oil Kings aside, we could do a lot worse than drafting these two. To get Lazar with a mid to late first round pick (if the season goes well) could turn out to be a steal.
