and on that note whats the deal with gardiner. He's too good to move for luongo but he's in every trade proposal for a player not-named-luongo. Is he really that good, he's only had one good season and you guys seem kinda two-faced about him
or do it the old fashion way, tank till u get enough lottery picks
Because Kessel's a 25 year old who's put up 4 straight 30 goal seasons? The point of rebuilding is to acquire young talent, not ship it out.

He's good -- and I feel like I'm the only Leafs fan who'll say it -- but he's not top pairing good. He's definitely got above average skating, vision, and passing, but he's a bit clueless in his own zone and his positioning in front of his net is brutal. That said, as a converted forward, he's only been playing defense for a few years, and only at the pro level for one year, so I guess there's room to grow. He really just needs to get his positioning down and learn to keep an active stick.
Why the hell would any team do any of these trades? And CanuckCity, he is offered as the main centerpeice for a big value guy, but less not argue how Luongo has bad value, as this isn't a Luongo thread.
Why trade Gardiner when you are trying to rebuild also?

Leafs have tons of young, promising PMDs and a lot of fans want to move one (usually Gardiner) for an upgrade in another position.
Dirt-poor logic on your part though. You cannot expect people to be realistic about A and then ask them not to be realistic about B, when they are intrinsically tied.
Undoubtedly there would be worries about the cap hit if no salary is going back, but he'd be pretty useful on the blueline regardless.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
Does anyone know what team had the most #1s in a single draft?
Based on this proposal you would have 6 #1s....given them rebuilding and this is a deep drift Id think they just keep all 6 1st rounders.
That said......
The only one I could see happening would be the Edmonton deal for Phaenuff...but only if Edmonton felt they would make the playoffs and thus it likely be high teens/low 20s. This trade would not happen if they felt they would have a top 10 pick next year.
Well they've been royally screwing up the rebuild by trying to accelerate it... and they've set themselves back because of it. The Kessel trade is a perfect example of how. I like Kessel. If he was the final piece that the Leafs needed to make a deep playoff run, it'd have been a good trade. Instead they basically traded 2 top 5 picks for one. That set them back exactly one year.
Toronto needs what Toronto ownership has never been able to tolerate. They need to be complete trash for a few years. And that doesn't mean just losing (which is what they've been doing), but it means having almost zero high profile players on the team. The team needs to just accept that it needs to be completely broken for a while. That's the only thing that's going to restock the system. The Oilers, Isles and Penguins are all pretty good examples of teams rebuilding the right way, though they're in different stages and have varying degrees of success. This is the way it's supposed to be done. You don't keep a **** team, but also have 4 or 5 star players on it who are ~30 years old.
If they were a small market team they could do that....basically gut the team and then rebuild.
Not to mention that there are still allot of question marks with the Leafs that didn't get mentioned. I mean aren't Lupul and MacA ufa's at the end of this season? (thought I read they were) Until they are signed and after losing/moving Lombardi and Connolly (trade and I am not certain if Connolly passed waivers or got picked up but either way...) it seems to me like Nonis is going to go with as close of a youth movement as he can get away with which I think will be the fastest way to complete an actual rebuild to return the Leafs to being a contender.
Lol for the sake of things, lets just assume all of these trades went down as ridiculous as it is, for fun. Who in the hell would be playing for Toronto? Thats 8 roster players right there lol, just all of a sudden 8 huge holes to fill?
They might challenge for worst record of all time if Kessel got hurt hahahaha
