Aren't you 12 to 14 hours ahead of us. So the game has already occurred where you are. Any chance you can provide me with today's winning power ball numbers.

Hey caps fans, good luck with your year, etc...

Quick question: Are you guys going to be playing a style like the playoffs last year. Or is it anticipated to be a totally dif system?

They call it balanced system... not "hunterhockey".

How open it will be remains to be seen, but it won't be what Hunter did. At the very least it seems Oates wants to drive possession, not avoid it as much as possible.

Apparently what we will do is what is being done in Hershey, if anyone knows what Hershey runs.

Blindly I predict it'll be in the middle of what Bruce and Hunter ran

Randy, since it's the weekend before the Inauguration, perhaps a political analogy might be appropriate.

Bruce Boudreau was a progressive or liberal when it came to the style of hockey he wanted the team to play.

Dale Hunter was a conservative or return to normalcy with his style.

Adam Oates will be a moderate.

places hand on hockey puck swiped from msg locker room tour 15 years ago

I do solemnly swear to support the far too often unheard voice of the moderate that tries to represent everyone, from Ovi to Sarge.

Introducing Adam Oates

Fun Fact, his favorite actress is not Lindsay Lohan.

Hooray for GDTs, new hopes, new coaches, and sloppy post-lockout hockey!

The only thing that's kind of a bummer is that the Caps don't have any rookies expected to make a contribution this year. I like watching at least one or two a year try to break in and make their mark. Oh well, there are a TON of interesting rookies around the league this year. The Calder race should be interesting.

With an injury or two I could see Garrett Mitchell getting called up and contributing on one of the bottom two lines.

Poti suiting up tonight is nothing short of remarkable, no matter how he plays. If he plays with any proficiency, that's even more startling.

x2 on sloppy hockey. It's what tempers my enthusiasm in the short-term. I expect quite a few 6-5 penalty-filled games. Wild but stressful for coaches.

@SWhyno: #Caps going with 7 defenseman. Hillen in. Erskine, Fehr, Crabb out.

Both teams going with 7D and Poti returns. It would be great if he can be a top 4D again. Or at least an alternative should Hamrlik need less TOI.

I'll admit I had completely given up on Poti. The mere fact that he's suiting up is unbelievable.

Marcus Johansson - Nicklas Backstrom Alex Ovechkin

Wojtek Wolski Mike Ribeiro Troy Brouwer

Jason Chimera Jay Beagle Joel Ward

Matt Hendricks Mathieu Perreault ?

So lines should look something like this. Oates double shifting Ovie?

7 d with poti in makes a lot of sense. ive gotta say that poti should be given all props for determination and desire. he made it back. who knows how long it lasts but even getting a sweater again remarkable.

now, if he can skate like he used to, then....thats a major advantage for the capitals.

The fact that Poti can even skate is unbelievable in itself, let alone play at the NHL level. Like most others, I'd completely given up on him ever playing again. I'm stoked for the guy, it's his career and his livelihood and he's obviously worked bloody hard to get back to where he is. On the other hand, there are cap implications that need to be considered, however I have faith in GMGM (no matter how misplaced) to sort this out.

I'm damned excited for the season to start today. You're lying if you say otherwise, because you sure as hell wouldn't be here. I thought that trying to catch a game outside of Gamecenter was difficult in New Zealand, being in China on business for a few weeks, I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I won't watch the Caps until February.

I'll call Washington over Tampa 4-2. Looking for a big game from the guys here. They've got a ton to prove and I hope they come up big.

Lets go Caps

Will say this, if it comes down to a shootout, I like our chances with Ribeiro, Wolski and Hendricks.

I like this, much stronger as well once Laich returns. I'm hoping to see him slot in at centre on the third line, with the ability to shift into the top 6 for some extra minutes.

Would be fantastic to see that second line click and have two legit scoring lines, a shutdown line and some interesting guys on the 4th line when required.

Ward was a major disappointment last season, so he has to prove himself.

When Laich returns would prefer something like this:

Marcus Johansson - Nicklas Backstrom Alex Ovechkin

Wojtek Wolski Mike Ribeiro Troy Brouwer

Jason Chimera Brooks Liaich Eric Fehr/Joel Ward

Matt Hendricks Jay Beagle Joey Crabb

Purretu

That 4th line would be entertaining.

That's exactly how I'd play it once Laich is back too.

Wolski has a ton to show and I've got some faith in him. Chimera/Laich/Ward was great at the start of last season and has the potential to be a great shutdown third line.

Alternatively, Laich could move to the left wing on the second line if Wolski disappoints in which case you move Beagle up one line.

Hate the idea of Purretu playing in the bottom six, it's hard to see where he fits in the lineup but there's absolutely no doubt he's earned a shot. How Oates manages him and Fehr at full strength will be interesting.

mcphee said regarding poti that there were no salary cap issues. the caps have plenty of room there.

as to ward. i think there is more to that than meets the eye. ward scored 18 even strenth points for the caps for the caps in 11;39 of average even strenth time. his overall average was just a 12 and a half per game and he was +12. previous season in nashville he had 23 esp in 13:41 of average even strenth time per game. thats about the same production per minute. nashville used him on the pp and he played over 17 minutes on average. his role was completely different.

the caps got him for the playoffs. he was tied with ovechkin for 4th on the team in even strenth points in the playoffs was tied for 5th oveall. he played 10:25 per playoff game. he scored the biggest caps goal of the playoffs.
