No kidding. Buying out 6 prime UFA years for $5 million a pop.

What a steal.

A great deal and classy of Edler.

But I really think he did the right thing. First, it is still a a lot of money, even if he left some on the table. He really does not need to worry about money anyway. So instead he chose security in the home organisation, playing on a good team and actually having the best years of his life right there in Vancouver.

These years could instead be a lot more harsh with tougher expectations coming from a higher salary after hitting free agency and an unknown environment. This is the years he will remember when he gets older, it is a good thing to arrange so that the memories got a higher possibility being good ones.

Good deal for both the club and the player. Congratulations. He could have earned a lot more if he become a free agent but I guess staying in one organization who is able to compete is worth even more. And when he turns 32 and will sign his next deal he is still in his prime and most likely an even better player.

Wow that's excellent one for Canucks.

Unless his back is really bad. Doubt it though.

I thought he was heading to FA as there were rumors that he had rejected 4.6 per or something during the offseason.. Detroit is even more ****ed now.

Grats for Canucks fans.

Weird timing, came almost out of nowhere. For me at least. Little less leverage in Lou deal now, imo.

Wow, that's a great deal.

What's in store for Ballard now though? Fifth highest paid d-man on the team at 4.2m.

Congrats Canuck fans, pretty solid deal. I think this is close to what the Blues lock Petro up with.

IMO, Edler is a good option for any blueline, but he can be somewhat inconsistent... such as playoffs.

I am not a Canuck fan . I am an Oiler fan and also like the Flames as i grew up in Calgary . Anyone who does not think this is a good deal is jealous or does not watch hockey . and another thing do you think Wideman is consistent ? Think about it ,he is getting paid more . When fans from every team is saying it a great deal , this should tell you something . Only a few have had something negative to say about this = trolls

The best potential free agent D is off the market. There are not many good options on the free agent market this summer. Mostly older guys looking for one big contract. Players who have seen their best days already. Even the forwards ranks thin out after the two Anaheim guys. There are a handful of players who are young enough to still contribute over the next 4-5 years. Many old guy free agent forwards too.

Lou is worth 5.33 m all day long right now and probably for the next 5 years . It is the later years that people worry about . In 5 years the cap could be 80 m . Who knows . I ask one question which i know owners would look at . Say a team like TML had Lou . How many extra millions do he bring in each year by getting them into the playoffs ? I say Lou is worth it . They money he is paid over the contract could be recovered in a couple of deep playoffs runs . Before people go on about choking in the playoffs . I say he was their best player 2 shutouts in the finals isn't choking , Plus he has to win 12 other playoff games to get there

Way to go Vancouver, great deal. I was really hoping Edler would hit FA and the Blues could nab him, but it was a pipe dream.

With the back comments, you have to realize that in the context of the quote last year was the first season at below 100% and he scored 49 pts. Implied in the quote is that it should slowly get better over time, but might not quite reach 100% ever again.

Very nice deal for Vancouver.

Burrows for 4yrs at $2mill/yr, and now 4yrs at $4.5mill/yr
Higgins 2yrs $1.9mill/yr
Hamhuis for 6yrs at $4.5mill/yr
Bieksa for 6yrs at $4.6mill/yr
Garrison for 6yrs at $4.6mill/yr
Hansen for 3yrs at $1.35mill/yr
Lapierre for 2yrs at $1mill/yr

The only questionable one (now) has been the Malhotra contract, though it's hard to blame him based on his injury. Malhotra earned every penny of his contract before he got hurt.

The worst contracts on the team are Ballard and Booth's... both players acquired via Florida.

I'd say that's a pretty good track record to suggest he's pretty good at contract control, despite the much debated Luongo contract.
Reminds me of evaluations of Scott Howson's drafts, really. "LOL but he drafted Nikita Filatov!"

Ballard looked good last season, and I expect him to look better this season (and they can afford to keep him this season).

Tanev is with the team from the start, and Tanev and Ballard have great chemistry. That should lead to more consistent play which either increase his value to the point where the team can trade him for decent assets (not great - a lot of teams will have to make undervalue trades this offseason, or make compliance buyouts and I don't think Ballard would pass waivers), or increase his value to the team to the point where they can't afford to keep him (at which point Booth would be set free and youth has to be brought in for scoring depth).

I think a trade is most likely, as Ballard at $4.2M will never look like good value compared to Hamhuis, Bieksa, or Edler (likely Garrison too, but I'll wait for him to prove that).

He's looked great in camp and is going to be very motivated to live up to his salary. Ballard at his best is worth every cent of his contract. We haven't seen much of that lately though.
