No. If someone claims him he HAS to play on the NHL roster, he would have to go through waivers again to be re-assigned to the AHL. I don't see him being claimed to play in the NHL on any other team.

Gryba is still on his ELC, he would not have to go through waivers.

Another reason why AHL playing in large Arenas makes zero economical sense except feeding egos of management..Houston Aeros

It's getting kind of warm in here: An update on the Toyota Center Lease

"(Ideal home: Where will the Houston Aeros play next season? Toyota Center is just too big for the small crowds the Aeros draw. They need to find a more "intimate" ice rink. I'm betting there will be an announcement soon)"

That's the point..looks good on paper but they play in the same building as the Rockets which TC holds 18,000+..expenses overcomes revenue..

Eric Gryba is NOT on his ELC this season he is now on a standard contract 2-way.

As for waivers on Eric I have no idea on that now as a new CBA is effect. So who knows about that.

I am NOT a waiver expert dam rules on it are confusing to me, I read the rules on the OLD CBA on waivers it still was confusing to me after I read them........

There's a waiver calculator for you on CapGeek if you are uncertain about specific players.

Oh that's right, he was qualified at the end of last year. I forgot this was his fourth year. I stand corrected.

Would love to see Gryba called up to Ottawa & Benoit returned to Bingo, I doubt anyone would grab Benoit off waivers. Gryba is exactly what Ottawa needs a big, tough defensive defencemen with size, who can block shots & has the size/strength to deal with NHL forwards something Benoit lacks.

That may be but Benny is a smarter player, crafty w/ the puck, more experienced and point producer..

Don't get me wrong Grybes brings it and I like him, but Benny, right now, is a better fit for Ottawa..

There are a few reasons why I prefer Gryba & size is one of them. Gryba is a right shot & Ottawa needs a natural right shot playing the right side. Benoit is a left shot playing the right side, it's not his natural side, it`s small issue but still an issue. I find that Benoit is too small & not strong enough to handle the bigger NHL forwards, he seemed to me to get knocked off the puck easily & they purposely targeted him as a player to go after & knock off the puck & it worked several times.

While I would agree that Benoit is the better all around hockey player, I think with his size issues he is better suited for the AHL & not big enough or strong enough for the NHL. Gryba's size, strength & toughness IMO is a better match & more of what Ottawa needs. Ottawa already has Karlsson, Gonchar & Wiercioch as PMD & point producers & need a shutdown defenceman, a shot blocker & another big tough guy to drop them if need be & Gryba brings all that. Just a difference of opinion.

Gryba is not waiver eligible until next fall.

On a related note, here are the current B-Sens (prospects only) that will need waivers to go back to the AHL next year:

Eric Gryba
David Dziurzynski
Corey Cowick
Stephane Da Costa
Mike Hoffman

Benoit:

signed his first contract at 21yo
was waiver exempt for 3yrs/80nhl games
lost waiver exemption at the start of 2008-09 season (even though he was in europe, the clock kept ticking)

Gryba:

signed his first contract at 22yo
was waiver exempt for 3yrs/70nhl games
will lose his waiver exemption at the start of 2013-14 season.

by the start of next season:

Gryba: bottom pairing NHL dman, would get claimed.
DD: bottom six energy guy, might get claimed.
Cowick: 4th liner/13th fwd at best, wont get claimed.
Stephane Da Costa: 2nd/3rd line playmaker, would get claimed.
Mike Hoffman: bottom six energy guy with some top six ability, might get claimed.

I would be surprised if anyone picked him up on waivers because it would mean he would have to play in the NHL & I think he is a good AHL player not an NHL player, especially at his age.

Sorry, ouroboros didn't have Benoit on his list. I think Benoit is a #7 NHL dman right now and trying to get him through waivers would be risky if someone is looking for depth or pp help. In this short season teams are going to have to rest players, so having a cheap guy like Benoit who can step in in a pinch might be tempting.

I didn't include Benoit because he's not a prospect or currently on the B-Sens roster, but he would need waivers. In any case I think he'd likely clear.

Wiercioch would need waivers next year as well but I think he's in the NHL full-time from here on out.

So does Benoit have to play a certain number of games before he has to clear waivers or is it on a specified date

benoit has to clear waivers to go down, period. He's had to since 2008-09.

@ouroboros, yeah, i know why you didnt include him. I do think that normally benoit would clear, but in this condensed season i'm not as sure. Teams are all going to end up using 9/10+ dmen over the course of the season as they start resting guys, and someone like benoit could be valuable depth - and better than having an actual AHL prospect sit in the pressbox.
