Wilson got into a fight. Did a good job. I would say he won on points, but not KO because Dalton Smith tackled him at the end. Was given in instigation on the fight.

Klassen with another good move. Stopped JAM dead when he tried to go around him. The only defenseman doing well tonight.

Kolarik is hurt. Looks bad. Is a major injury probably because he looks to be in serious pain.

4-1 on a power play goal. It was a redirection two feet away from the net. Two people were parked in front of the net. McIlrath had his man covered perfectly, the other one was left all alone because hey, why bother paying attention to the guy two feet away from your goalie on the penalty kill. Obviously that guy scored.

Kolarik is back. I guess it wasn't serious at all. He was really screaming and waving for the medical staff in the second period, but there he is, back at the start of the third.

Talbot is having a rough one. Four goals and two posts. He has brilliant moments, but then there are moments where you are wondering if he's playing or having lunch.... and now he just made two huge, most beautiful saves.

McIlrath rushed the puck well, then passed it to the side to nobody. Not sure what that was about.

Yogi then rushed the puck really well. His skating is much improved. He's having a good game.

Thomas keeps getting manhandled out there. His size is starting to really concern me. He should stop going into the dirty areas as much, he doesn't have the body for the boards. He needs to learn to get set up around the hash marks to use his remarkable shot. It's a killer from there. I wonder if he would be a guy who'd play better with better linemates. A good playmaker with Thomas would be excellent.

Mash got robbed from a foot away. He lifted the puck, but not hard enough and York caught it.

Noob scored on a double redirection from Vernace, with the other person touching the puck being Kolarik. Last minute of the game, so it changed nothing. 4-2 final score.

REVIEW

The Good

1. Klassen: very good game, showed good on-ice awareness, takes the body properly, good defense. His skating a million times better than it was 2 years ago.

2. Jean: all over the ice, using his size and skating ability. Drove to the net well.

3. Noob: scored two goals, used the body. It sucks that NHL teams don't want to give him a chance.

4. Yogi: Good game. He's dead set on not going back to the ECHL. Good skating ability, good size, decent ability to read plays, nice shot.

5. Parlett: rushed the puck well, did not cause turnovers.

Up and Down

1. Talbot: 4 goals plus 2 goal posts, but also made at least a half a dozen beautiful saves. This could've been much worse considering how badly Spring dominated this one.

2. McIlrath: more bad than good, to be honest. Looked lost out there. Not sure what to do, so sometimes he just stands around, sometimes he'll rush the puck with no purpose, but on the other hand, he's capable of rushing the puck to a degree most people here don't realize. He won't be an offensive guy, but he can move if he has to. Still a significant amount of time out of the NHL. Another full calendar year probably.

3. Mash: good along the boards, but clearly not used to playing with these guys. Let's see what he does going forward.

4. Pyett: better offensively than defensively, but not enough offense for the NHL.

5. Thomas: great shot, tries very hard, drives to the net and fights along the boards, but he keeps getting manhandled. He's fearless, but weak.

Nothing Special

1. Miller: again did a good job shielding the puck away from the opponents using his body, but not much else.

2. Tessier: does what he does every game, which is decent but does not stand out.

3. Wiebe: good penalty killer, not much of anything else. He'll stick around as an AHL 4th liner.

4. Kolarik: one of the better players on the team normally, but did nothing special tonight.

5. Haley: Looked like the Rupp of the AHL.

6. Bourque: he's like Thomas, but without the shot.

7. Wilson: showed he can be an AHL 4th liner who can fight and not mess up too much.

The Bad

1. Vernace: he's an offensive defenseman who can't score or pass. Holy crap! If hockey were soccer, he'd be a midfielder, but seeing as there's no need for a guy who specializes just in rushing from the blue line to the red line, I don't understand what purpose he serves.

2. Collins: if my last name had been Collins, I would've changed it after watching him play just to avoid any association. I see no redeeming qualities to his game. What is the purpose of having him suit up? To give Talbot an opportunity to stop a few more shots from the giveaways by this guy?

We lost Kreider, Segal, Hrivik and Gilroy. There's nobody left. This team needs a guy who can transport the puck from his own zone to the offensive blue line, it needs another McIlrath (paging Dr. Sam Noreau), it needs a playmaker and a scorer.

Isn't Jim Shownfeld the GM of this team? What the beep is he doing letting this team go down the drain?

Honestly, how bad are the guys in the ECHL if they got beat out for a job by Vernace and Collins. Holy crap!

You know, if there's one guy who can benefit from Barb Underhill, it's McIlrath. He has balance issues that are easy to fix, but he clearly hasn't worked on it yet.
Maybe they should call up Desisile and Marcou on D they seem to both be doing well in ECHL for Greenville

First, thanx for the insightful analysis, Beacon!
Hrivik and Segal will most likely both be back sooner than later.
The offense should IMO be OK then, but we miss guys like Deveaux, JAM, Wellman and Zuccarello compared to last year. Boucher we do not miss though. Lots of young guys in CT this year. Which is probably good in the long run.
You are right though. Need another D (or two) to replace Vernace/Collins.

yep, too bad he couldnt make the Jackets out of camp, kind of surprised but on the same not it looks like Sanguinetti FINALLY made the nhl in Carolina so it takes time.

The one that annoys me is Kundratek, did he ask for a trade? That was a terrible deal since the guy they got backs not even in the organization, should of got a pick atleast

are there not waiver wire guys or UFAs that can help CT?

Surprising as it sounds - Columbus has a fairly decent defense.
What is interesting is that Sangs was actually part of the package (he turned into a Carolina 2nd) that later got us Erixon that then helped us land Nash. Now really hope Nash explodes in NYC.

Kundratek trade was awful, but maybe the only bad trade for a while done by Sather (Korpedo for Lisin was another pretty bad one IMO). People saying he wanted out have a right to that opinion, but I think that a better return would have been in order regardless of what he "wanted". The pickup of Bouchard could and should have been topped - but it is not the biggest deal on the planet either.

Problem with picking up waiver guys (intended for CT) is that they apparently have to be on the NYR roster for 30 days first - and that complicates things quite a bit - no?

yea the Lisin for Korps deal was bad and the Kundratek one looks to be one too. But Sather does have some good deals of course, well some great ones too.

I wont bring up the Rangers have like 8 million in dead cap space with Redden and Drury UFA buyourts, lol

As for waivers yea that makes sense but still alot of vet UFAs that can start in the minors. Maybe they want NHL deals though

from cap geek , took out a bunch of guys likely retired or guys likely wanting NHL deals for sure or they likely play in Europe

Would think you are right there. Most likely the NYR brass has been waiting until all the NHL rosters are set in stone, then they will make a move or two to add necessary depth & talent to CT (when these guys have a totally different situation).

Wonder what happened to Sykora btw? Heard he was coming over to sign somewhere but he just went into hiding it seems. Maybe he stopped by Averys bar for a quick shot and then God knows what went down?

Just give Newbury the Captain's "C" already... Although not the smartest, heart and soul guy who shows up every game. None of the "older" guys on this team really deserves an "A", might as well give one to Klassen for having improved as much as he has is really the steadiest guy of all D, and Shayne Wiebe cus he plays with a lion's heart although he's not showing up on the score sheet.

Weibe is seen as too much of a bubble player right now. He may or may not stick in the AHL. He's playing his heart out to stay at this level, but let's see how he plays when he calms down.

I agree on Noob since he's the best player on the team and tries really hard. He's someone who definitely deserves the C. I am having a hard time thinking up of anyone else.

I also agree on Klassen. The guy went from the ECHL to being on the top pairing in the AHL. Granted our defense is only a notch above that of the ECHL, but we've certainly seen a lot of progress from him, and he's another heart and soul guy who plays the game the way it should be played.

How about giving the second "A" to Kyle Jean, if we want to go with a young guy. If not, then Segal or Kolarik seem to be the obvious chioces, leaning towards Segal because his personality is more suited to a leadership role.

My Whale updates will be a little late this time, not exactly live. Will be watching the game during the breaks and intermission, plus right after the Rangers game. (AHLlive allows you to pause.) But I will still give occasional check-in.

FIRST PERIOD

Miss in goal. Good start to the game by him with several excellent stops, including on a semi-breakaway. He's good when he has to defend someone straight up, but he needs to learn to move side to side. He's not a good skater, otherwise, he'd be a good prospect...

Noob hits the goal post, then immediately after that both he and Parlett are called for a penalty. The Parlett penalty was total BS. He's played well so far.

Miss made 5-6 save on the PP, but we killed it off.

When the penalty ended, Parlett and Noob when on 2-on-none; Noob gave a nice feed to Parlett who somehow failed to score by putting it over the goal. For an offensive defenseman, his offense sucks.

McIlrath tried to pinch in, but got caught up and the Pirates scored on a 3-on-2.

Noob just scored a PP goal scorer's goal into the top corner, getting a pass from Kolarik as he was skating towards the left faceoff circle. Kolarik and Parlett with assists.

McIlrath is now killing penalties, as I predicted he soon would. He's also been moved up to the top pairing with Parlett.

FIRST PERIOD OVER. Miss kept this team in the game. Good performance so far.

Have the Rangers/Whale changed something about their system? I understand the Whale defense isn't very good, but last year it was more of a team defense focused on gap control, shot blocking, etc. The system, as the team grows into it during the season, should be clamping down on a bit on all the goals against. But this year for the Whale it's not. Is it because the team is just that bad? or the system is diff than last few years?

SECOND PERIOD

Whale draw a penalty. Pyett from the blue line to Noob inside the right faceoff circle, he passes to Kolarik right in front of the net, who deflects it in. The Whale is being outplayed 5-on-5, but they scored on both their power plays, and now lead 2-1.

McIlrath with a turnover that forced him to trip up the Pirate. PK killed off.

Pyett took a penalty. Parlett did a good job on the PK, which has been killed off. The Whale is 5-for-5 on the PK and 2-for-2 on the PP, which is the difference in the game. Miss stopped 19 out of 20 shots so far.

McIlrath with a nice stick play from behind to prevent a breakaway.

SECOND PERIOD OVER: Much better play this period. During the first, I was thinking that this team is just not of AHL quality, they are an ECHL team with a few AHLers. But then the light went on and they outplayed the Pirates in the second period. Much better game by defensemen than the last few.

how does Brandon Mashinter look?? does he have any chance of being a NHL player? he does have some size seem to have some skill.

His decision making is just not smart, which is why he's in the minors. He's a useful AHL player, but he needs some serious coaching before playing in the NHL. He had a fight tonight, but didn't do a great job.

THIRD PERIOD

Took yet another penalty. Great PK effort by Bourque. Miss stopped a breakaway. Klassen with two clears.

Parlett called for kneeing. After 6 Pirate PPs without a goal, finally someone scored. It was Wiebe with a shorthanded goal. 3-1.

Haley drew a penalty behind the Pirate net.

Tessier on the a breakaway. Backhander into the net. Parlett with a great pass. Pyett with the other assist. 4-1.

Whale almost had a 2-on-1, but Miller ruined it by going offside. Totally useless tonight.

McIlrath with a coincidental roughing minor. Hextall also went off.

Vernace with a give away that led to a 2-on-1. Miss with a big glove save.

The Whale is just dominating at the end of the game.

Miss with 32 saves on 33 shots.
