684 days later...the Pacioretty-Chara incident revisited
Everyone had time to cool off (hopefully) so I was just wondering if peoples opinions may have changed or not...was the hit intentional or accidental?
I thought I'd clear this up because the first few comments are picking both answers so here it is:
He wanted to hit him and he accidentally injured him by driving him into the stanchion
He wanted to hit him and intentionally injured him by driving him into the stanchion
Incident:
Random fact: Chara and Pacioretty did have issues in prior games leading up to the one where Pacioretty got injured
Sorry if I'm reopening any old wounds or arguments between the habs fanbase and the bruins one, I don't mean to...very deep down we all like each other
Chose "accidental" because the options are stupid. No, Chara did not intentionally destroy Pacioretty, but he did intentionally drive him into the stanchion.
I felt then, as I feel now, that there was intent to injure. You don't do what Chara did and expect a different outcome unless you are as dumb as dirt.

Fixed the question in the OP so you can understand better
I think it was intentional and Chara really wanted to hit him hard but I don't think he wanted that result. The puck was passed Chara for a while and he clearly didn't care and knew what he wanted to do

Exhibit A as to how hockey doesn't matter on ESPN:
Last night an ESPN program was discussing how the Detroit Pistons needed a hero citing the heroes on the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and no mention of the Detroit Red Wings. All this despite the Red Wings probably being the most succesful team in Detroit right now.
Random fact: Chara and Pacioretty did have issues in prior games leading up to the one where Pacioretty got injured
Thanks for that completely random fact.
I dunno, it was clear interference, and the hit was absolutely intentional, but whether he wanted to ride him into the stanchion or not is still up in the air for me. I'd speculate no, but have no problems with someone thinking he did. If he did do it on purpose, I don't think there was any intent to injure. It would have had to be a split-second decision, and I don't think there was enough time there for him to think it out much. People like to think of Chara as some behemoth that plays dirty, but he really doesn't have many other questionable hits.
Seriously this is so stupid, the hit wasn't even dirty besides being maybe a second late. Chara certainly didn't try to injure him.
I mean just look at Chara ever since that hit, he hasn't been the same player, hes been timid on the ice almost afraid to really hit someone because of what he did to Patches, he doesn't want that to happen again.
My guess is 95% of people will say intentional are Habs fans who still haven't gotten over it.
The hit was intentional, not many people hit someone on the opposing team by accident.
He definitely didn't want to hurt him that bad. That's ridiculous. Of course the two had issues in prior games, so he wanted to land a big hit, because that's what he does. But he didn't break his neck on purpose.
I think he intentionally hit him into the stanchion, but I don't think he expected or wanted the result to be that severe.
I tend to agree with this. Chara was in position to hit him sooner (which would've made the hit both not late and not into the stanchion), but didn't. I certainly don't think he intended to injure Patches that badly, though.
I think he intentionally wanted to hit him into the stanchion. You can see him hitting Patches and then using his glove to steer his head into the stanchion.
Did he want to severely injure him? Doubt it. You never know, but I don't see Chara like that.
